Lily Allen Calls Susan Boyle “Over-Rated”
The are two ways celebrities who need a little attention can guarantee publicity. Actually, scratch that, there are many ways celebs can get publicity, including sex tapes, pregnancy rumors, dramatic break-ups, and quickie marriages. But the two strategies that seem to be the most popular lately are the always-successful yo-yo dieting blitz, as perfected by Oprah, Jessica Simpson, Kirstie Alley, and Mariah Carey, and bad-mouthing another celeb on twitter or one’s personal blog.
We’ve seen two examples of the latter in the last week. First, Clay Aiken, who recently split from his label after his latest album On My Way Here sold a measly 159,000 copies, blasted Adam Lambert, break-away star of this season’s “American Idol,” on his personal blog. Calling one of Lambert’s performances “contrived, awful, and slightly frightening!” Aiken later backtracked in another lengthy blog post, apologizing to Lambert for his “colorful choice of words.” “Since my previous blog got dissected like a biology lab frog, I suppose I should clarify and even retract some of what I wrote,” Aiken whined. Gee, Clay, what did you think would happen when you publicly bad-mouthed the biggest Googled name of the week?
Taking a page from Clay’s playbook, Lily Allen dissed the other overnight sensation of the moment, Susan Boyle, hoping to steer some of the attention her way. Accusing the dowdy singer of lacking vocal control and good timing, Lily tweeted: “She can sing, but it’s not about talent with her, is it?” For a pop singer who has a history of pregnancy rumors, dramatic break-ups, yo-yo dieting, and picking fights with other celebs, the same could be said about her. Remember that saying that it’s better to say nothing and be thought a fool than to say something and prove that you are? Turns out that extends to Twitter blasts and blog entries too. Bitter much, Clay and Lily?

I agree with Lily, actually. Lily doesn’t have a reason to be bitter - she’s got incredible album sales and is doing really well. I think the only reason Susan Boyle has done so well is because she looks a bit shabby and can sing - and people love an underdog winning out - you can’t deny that a good sob story gets the public imagination all fired up. There are a lot of singers out there who can sing as well as Susan Boyle, if not better, the only difference being outward appearance.

@misspixie: She may have a point, but there has to be other, classier ways to get it across. Sending out an online blast just comes across as whining to me. Had she been interviewed and asked about this or been a judge on the show, then it’s okay. I’m not sure what to say about Clay without living up to my screen name, so I’m just going to back away from the keyboard.

I suppose you’re right - perhaps the medium could be better - but at the same time, I think she is entitled to her opinion. My guess is she was watching the show and tweeted her comments straight after, and the only reason that it’s getting so much media attention is because of who she is…

You said “Gee, Clay, what did you think would happen when you publicly bad-mouthed the biggest Googled name of the week? “
His comment wasn’t meant to be public. It was on a private board.
What Clay should have learned by this besides the obvious is
that he is still a big deal!! (at least for all to post and publish his remarks while still taking him to task for the remarks.) If Taylor Hicks had said that would anyone have noticed??

Well..the thing is, celebrities should still be able to do SOME normal things. A lot of people think that SuBo is overrated, and I’m not surprised that a celebrity is included in the group of people who feel that way. In fact, I commend Lily for admitting that she doesn’t think that SuBo is the cat’s pajamas. I whole heartedly agree with Lily. Plus, Susan’s last performance was lackluster in comparison, and I truly think she’s running out of steam.
I’d hate to be famous because I’m that “shabby looking woman who can sing”

Lilly Allen is a nasty piece of work. She is just jealous that Susan has more talent than her.She has made nasty comments about loads of celebritys who are better than her and she is just a spoilt little cow.

Who is Lily Allen? I never heard of her.
That aside, are her comments perhaps sour grapes because someone older and less fashionable that she can command such global attention?
Lily Allen is entitled to an opinion, we all are….......but she seems unable to express an opinion in any other way than crass, cheap and insulting and that tells me more about her than who she writes about.

Sounds like Miss Lily’s a bit jealous of such a beautiful, angelic singing voice. You rock, Susan! Can’t wait for your album to hit the States!!!!!
