Less Is More: Simcha Goes From Rockabilly To Girl Next Door
Simcha rocks a very distinct look on a daily basis—eyeshadow and cat eyeliner, ruby red lips, plenty of bling and a pompadour. And she looks rad. But when she told us that the only people who’ve seen her sans the war paint are her bedfellows, we decided it was time for a make-under, just so she’d have a look to bust out on days when she wants to sleep in and stuff. The dramatic “after,” an oh-so-informative video and the products we used, after the jump!

It took several makeup wipes, but underneath all the layers we discovered Simcha’s freaking gorgeous complexion. Instead of her more traditional eye makeup, we dabbed on some transparent Clarins Instant Smooth, $30, which fills in fine lines and generally makes your skin look like it’s airbrushed, in a good way. We skipped foundation and dabbed on a tiny amount of AmazingCosmetics AmazingConcealer, $42, around her nose area, smoothed some NYX Rouge Cream Blush in Hot Pink, $7, on to give her cheeks a natural-looking flush, patted Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow in shimmery nude Honey Bunny, $19, on her lower lid and topped it off with some Kiehl’s Marvelous Mineral Mascara, $16.50. We let her smudge some Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited RD 148 lipstick, $23, on (since red is her signatuah coloh), and patted it down with a little Chapstick on top to get it more makeout-friendly sheer. Then Simcha literally let her hair down and removed her gold chains for a more low-key look. We think she looks great no matter what she’s working with, but now she’s got a five-minute look in her arsenal.
If you’ll be in the New York area and want your own make-under session, send a photograph and tell us why you might be a candidate by emailing style@thefrisky.com with the subject line “Less Is More.”

Ok this really bugs me. What was wrong with her in the first place? I congratulate Simcha for being so patient during this ‘make under event’ and extra applause for having massive confidence. However- I find it very rude when people go up to you and say… you know you need a make under. To truly find yourself and rock out as such can be extremely difficult.
Simcha is beautiful either way and I applaud her for being true to herself.
Plus I liked the rockabilly look much better.

I hear you. We prefer Simcha’s style just the way it is, too. Less Is More is literally about giving people an all-natural five minute look for when it might come in handy, that’s it. Because sometimes you feel lazy.

I totally get it. I was just thinking about this horrible episode of What not to Wear were Stacy and Landon(I think that his name?) received a woman who’s office signed her up unknowingly for the show because they didn’t like her style.
They woman had her own retro vibe. She was cool.
I watched in horror as she was tormented mostly by Stacy’s nasty comments on her personal choices of style. Ripped her from the seams and told her how she should look. Ugh… 8th grade all over again!

I love Simcha just the way she is. This is her style and this is what makes her, her…... I am definitely jealous of her complexion though.

I gotta vote for the original style, though the make-under looks great too! I love Simcha’s articles, so sassy and snappy, and her style seems to match it so well. I gotta say though, why did you take all the bling away for the made-under pic?
As a lazy, failing at becoming more of a morning person kind of girl, I’ve fallen head over heels for cool jewelry since it’s pretty much the easiest way to dress up almost ANY outfit. I washed my face, brushed my teeth, slapped on a little moisturizer, and ran my fingers through my hair before heading to work this morning, but I didn’t leave without my favorite necklace and bracelet. It makes the biggest difference when you rock the no-makeup look but don’t want to look un-put-together!

@msPriss: AGREED! I really dislike the spirit of those makeover shows (what not to wear, etc) that tell women how they should look. SO annoying! Also irritating: so-called “style police.” Would love to see the tables turned, heh…

@Erin I keep thinking that Stacy London looks like Crulea De Vile with that gray streak running threw her hair. Plus she’s very mean for no reason other than pure amusement.

@MsPriss: Its Stacy and Clinton. I think that you probably thought it was Landon because Stacy’s last name is London and they often introduce them by full names. Thats just a guess.

Simcha, no matter what you do, I know you’ll make any new look your own ‘cause you yourself are an original and you know your unique ideas and details will creep in on a daily basis. No matter how low-key you may strive, you’ll always shine. “You – and we – accept no imitations.” You have an image to maintain in step with your writing, darlin.’
ps: I like the pronunciation of your name.
@msPriss: “What not to Wear were Stacy and Landon(I think that his name?)” hee hee – almost: Stacy London and Clinton Kelly.

@SterlingSilver36: I knew someone had the answer! Thanks! It’s been a while sine I watched the show. I used to refer to Clinton as that poor man who as to work with her. I have discount cable threw my apartment complex so $40 bucks gets you all the weird channels past 300. So no more A & E. However it gave me hives just watching it. That and Bridzilla’s. I can’t watch that show anymore either.

:( I actually like What Not to Wear—and personally, while Stacy can easily come off as being a little harsh, I think most of it is in good fun, and I’ve noticed that if they think they’ve gone too far and actually offended someone, they’re very apologetic. plus, they always make sure to compliment everyone that’s on the show (i.e., something positive a/b their body that their current wardrobe isn’t flattering)...

That’s still alot of crap with $$$ next to it. But as I’m in the weeds about what kind of stuff is necessary on a daily basis this could be cheap, who knows, certainly not me.

I think Simcha looks all tough with her rockabilly make-up and style, then she looks totally sweet and innocent in her make-under picture. It’s cool to change it up once in a while, you look so cute either way simcha!

I liked Simcha’s look both ways but I prefer the edgier one. Plus with eyes on the smaller side (like myself) eyeliner helps bring them out.

I’m with sam! I love the show. And they usually don’t say “you have terrible taste.” They’ll say “you have such a cute butt and these furry pink hot pants just don’t do it justice - and by the way it looks like there’s a muppet on your ass.”
They insult the clothes, not the person. They compliment the people endlessly.
Was it necessary for Simcha to have a makeunder? No. But I don’t think the Frisky staff was insulting her with it! I think it’s fun - and good- to try out different things once in a while, whether that’s in your style, your hobbies, whatever. And friends are the perfect people to help you explore new things!

If you take away that Stacy and Clinton are mean and that they are making everyone dress the same then clearly you need help. You must be watching something else when people are talking to them because usually the people on the show give as much as they get as far as rudeness and being stubborn. What not to wear is a drastic make-over show for those who need alot of help fast, besides if you don’t like it stop watching. Maybe YOUR JEALOUS you are not on the show or secretly you know you dress like #&@$% and need help. As far as Simcha goes I loved her style before, in her make-under she looks like, well, she looks like she’s not there, it makes her eyes look piggy and her face chubbier. I loved her unique style, thats different from What Not to Wear, usually their style on that show is not put together, hers is put together and flattering, the most important part.

... um ok.. your such the minder reader. Still LMAO. There is no one here or on ‘What not to wear’ that I’m jealous of honey.
When you get out of your 20’s you’ll know what I’m talking about.
Until then good luck with that whole ‘I’m angry and right’ thing you got going on. Ignorance looks great on you.

Eff no; more is more. Especially when eyeliner is concerned.
I dig they way you guys approached this. It’s not “Hay gurl, lemme save your messy ass,” it’s “So you wanna try something new? Sweet.”
But Simcha, you’re hot either way. Srsly.

She looks fine either way, but I’m with y’all—I get tired of makeover shows standardizing everybody. Yeah, I know they tailor styles to body type and coloring, but it’s all in the same vein. Not all of us want to wear current clothes, and not all “weird” clothes look bad. I wear a lot of 1950’s stuff and, seriously, everybody likes it. I get more compliments than you can imagine and it looks much better on me than do modern clothes (I’m curvy. No matter what anyone tells you, modern clothing is not made for curvy women. Skinny-mini Stacy wouldn’t understand this).
Besides, I’ve seen Stacy in at least one fuchsia satin pillowcase-dress that I thought qualified her to be a turn-in for her own show. Ugh.
My mother and I were flipping through daytime talk-shows a few years ago and one of them was de-goth-izing some teenaged girls. Even my mother (who, admittedly, is not all that conservative as far as moms go) thought they looked better as goths. One girl in particular was a pretty good seamstress and made a lot of her own stuff. All in black lace, yes, but it wasn’t racy and it was actually more flattering than the T-shirt and skinny jeans they put her in.
