Legalize American Apparel!
We knew that American Apparel had very liberal views on immigration reform, but not this liberal. The company is under fire from U.S immigration officials for allegedly hiring about 1,600 employees who are not eligible to work in the United States. An additional 200 employees are said to have “discrepancies in their work records.” Officials are threatening to deport the workers if they are unable to prove legal residence in the U.S. American Apparel’s founder and CEO, Dov Charney, who was born in Canada, said in a statement, “It is the company’s hope—and my personal hope as an immigrant myself—that these employees are able to confirm their work authorization so that they may continue to work at American Apparel.” [Stylist.com]

What? An owner who sleeps with his employees and promotes sleazy ads (one of which was deemed copyright infringement) that objectify women could be capable of wanting to use illegals for cheaper labor?!? Oh, no, it has to be because he’s a pioneer in labor reform.
Not.

Who is to say that just because he’s hiring illegals means he is paying them less than his other employees? American Apparel is known for paying their factory workers an average of $12 an hour, well above the minimum wage (go ahead Google it). Not that I approve of his personal behavior but perhaps you should find some proof before condemning him as a hypocrite on his labor reform views and business ethics

I think the bigger issue here is the fact that he’s hiring immigrants that aren’t legally allowed to work in the US. That means they’re here illegaly. Is he a legal or an illegal immigrant of the US? I’d assume he has to be, or he couldn’t be the CEO of a major company. So he’s condoning people breaking the law when he himself followed legal procedure for citizenship. That makes me think he’s only doing it to make a statement, or for the publicity.
