- After a 40-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at gunpoint in the hotel’s parking garage in front of her two kids, Marriott Hotel & Spa in Stamford, CT, has responded to a lawsuit by the victim by saying she “failed to exercise due care for her own safety and the safety of her children and proper use of her senses and facilities.” The victim claimed her attacker, Gary Fricker, 56, had acted suspiciously in the hotel and garage for days prior to the attack, but the hotel says they had not been warned about any suspicious behavior by the man. [Greenwich Time]—This is an all-too-familiar story.
- A disabled woman in London, 22-year-old Riam Dean, has won her lawsuit against Abercrombie and Fitch. Dean, who has only one arm, said the store made her work in the stockroom, rather than on the floor with customers, because her disability did not fit with the brand's image. The court found that A&F failed to comply with employment law, but did not actually discriminate against her for being disabled. [BBC]
- Nine women, some of whom allegedly worked as prostitutes, have disappeared from Rocky Mount, NC, since 2005. Six of their bodies have been found, but three are still missing, and police suspect a serial killer could be to blame. [Breitbart]—That's food for thought in the debate about whether or not sex work should be legalized.
- A 16-year-old transgender teen in Spain is waiting for a judge to allow gender reassignment surgery so he can biologically become a she. Even though the teen's parents are supportive of the surgery, Spanish law requires that a court give its blessing if the subject is under 18. [Guanabee]—Poor kid. It's not fair that a court has to approve what she can do with her own body.
- Nancy Griffin, a North Carolina tennis player, is suing the city of Raleigh for $10,000 in a discrimination lawsuit because officials changed a rule penalizing players who refuse to play against others. Griffin alleged she is such an impressive player that the men refuse to play against her. [News & Observer]
- A Gallup poll of 1,006 Americans discovered 46 percent of adults identify themselves as "pro-choice," 47 percent as "pro-life," and seven percent said they had no opinion. [Gallup]

Yay for Riam Dean for standing up for herself! Logically it would make more sense for her to be out on the floor. I used to work in retail and everything in the stockroom would be difficult to do with one arm since it involves a lot of lifting and climbing up ladders to hang things. A&F is the most pathetic excuse for a company. I will celebrate the day when it is removed from my local mall.

@Amelia13: I can’t stand walking past their store in the mall! At our mall, there’s a kiosk directly outside A&F, and I feel so bad for those employees. The way-too-loud music, the overdone fragrance that assaults your nose within 30 feet of the entrance; I would have a headache every day. Plus, me being a big music geek, I can’t stand hearing some of the awful techno covers as I walk past; why must they destroy some good songs, too? Blech!

@11: I totally agree. Plus who the f*** wants to shop in the dark??! I feel like I need a flashlight just to see if there are people in there. It is a complete overload to the senses…I can’t see, all I can smell is bad perfume and cologne, all I can taste is, yep you guessed it…bad perfume and cologne, crappy music is harrassing my ears, and if I were to actually go in the store I would be able to feel cheap fabric with a ridiculous pricetag on it.

One of my friends told me a story when she heard of this. One of her buddies that lived in Georgia, who worked here and there as a runway model (so super gorgeous) and happened to be of Middle Eastern descent was hired by an A&F store manager to be a customer service employee. Then one day her store got a visit from the regional manager and he moved her to the stockroom because she didn’t fit “the A&F image”. If they keep this up, combined with their slumping sales, A&F is going to bankrupt themselves with discrimination lawsuits.

@I Go To 11, A. Men. I seriously hold my breath whenever I walk past the A&F at our mall, it’s skankerific.

Ah… so I spent 8 months commuting to that Marriott and sleeping there 5 nights week while I was on assignment in Stamford. That’s such a strange city, it tries so hard to have nice parts but it’s just a dump most of the time. I can see how something like that would happen in that parking garage… bad lighting, one exit per floor, not good.

I just don’t understand who would want to assault every single one of their senses so that they can over-pay for a little piece of fabric and some ribbons that AF has the gaul to charge $75 for! I am a mystery shopper (occasionally) and I have to go in there once in a while, and I love telling my company how rude all of the employees usually are! They’re so busy talking to one another it’s almost impossible to get someone to help you… but hey, at least they’re all beautiful and white! That’s what sells, right? Idiots!

I never liked A & F. I don’t think they realize that this image they speak of has nothing to do how they are really viewed by the general public.

Wow…way to continue the useless, hurtful, and untrue habit of victim-blaming, Marriott. Guess where I’ll never be staying?

i almost want to point-blank say that there is no such thing as being negligent in the case of your own rape. how is that even possible? to be negligent, you’d have to be walking around, singing a jaunty tune with lyrics such as, “i want to be raped, come and get me boys, i want to be raped,” in which case, IT WOULDN’T BE RAPE. yep, i’m pretty much okay with saying point-blank: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS BEING NEGLIGENT IN THE CASE OF YOUR OWN RAPE.
#&@$% hotels.
(sorry, i got a bit angry there).
