Lady Gaga’s Period Piece At The MTV Video Music Awards

The highlight performance from last night’s MTV Video Music Awards—for me anyway—was the divine Lady Gaga‘s “Phantom of the Opera”-esque rendition of “Paparazzi.” In the music video for the song, she gets shot up by the paps, but in her live performance, she looked like she had a massive brawl with Aunt Flo. First Tyra, now Lady Gaga. Is flaunting your period the next big thing?

I thought her performance was fantastic, if not quite a bit strange. But the best part of VMA performances is when the artist brings the elements of the music video for the song, and brings it to life on stage, maybe not in exactly the game way, but in a way that stays true to the video…and she definitely nailed it, as usual.

She’s fantastic and a great performer but something about her performance struck me as oddly grotesque.

Can someone explain the wheelchair to me?

I cannot stand this woman.  This performance was completely unsettling… something about her is absolutely off.  My ex was friends with Gaga when she was plain Stephanie… very very strange person.

Ironic that she sings a song about paparazzi when she courts them so strongly. She just happens to be a decently talented singer with a much better marketing plan than Kanye.

I don’t normally pay attention to current popular music but I do have a couple of friends who are in love with Lady Gaga.
And now I totally understand why.

I think Gaga’s plan is to create a new genre of music. Shock Pop possibly?  Catchy enough for mainstream radio play, and shocking enough to keep everyone talking. That’s my theory.

@GreenAura—not entirely new….Madonna did the same thing.

Gaga has a good voice and is a strong singer, but she’s modeling herself directly after Madonna.

You all may be too young to remember the “Like a Virgin” MTV music award performance controversy.  Similar costume, similar stage set up…same reactions.

@ writergirl:  I should be shot! I can’t believe I forgot about Madonna! I think my brain has been contaminated with all the little pop stars running around these days, that I forgot about one of the originals.

yes - why the wheelchair? and why the blood?

I think the wheelchair has something to do with how the paparazzi camp out at hospitals and rehabilitation centers to catch celebrities trying to sneak in and out.

The blood? Maybe because they “shoot” photos, and also a statement on stars that wind up dead from crazy stalkers.

The part I don’t get is the rabbit-eared helmet. WTF?

I especially like Kanye’s reaction shot. Everyone else is grooving, but he’s like “Why can’t that be me?”

i think this was an amazing performance. the wheelchair was just part of the setup - clearly, she was in a mental institution. “I’m your biggest fan, I’ll follow you until you love me”. Helllooooo, Psycho. The blood was a surprising add in. The whole performance was freaking awesome.

Also, i’m pretty sure the shot of the audience showed Diddy, not Kanye.

@breakthisvanity: You’re right on the Diddy, but he was still thinking that.

I dont see the big deal with her either! Shes obviously got everyone talking about her, so shes aiming in the right direction! At least she has the guts to do it, and exactly what i was thinking last night @writergirl. Um, why so shocking? Madonna did it, and look how popular she is. I thought it was odd, but intriguing.
And why the thought of period blood? i didnt even consider that, /shrug.

my boyfriend said, and i quote, “I felt more comfortable watching Marilyn Manson dress as a woman than watching Lady Gaga’s performance.”

and one of her dancers had a white thong on his face.

Lady Gaga is the only pop star who actually expresses him/herself. I think she is great. Everyone with a creative job, every great artist and every great writer has to be a little crazy. That is what makes them so interesting. Look at Michael Jackson. @greenaroa and @writergirl, if you want shock pop I suggest you immediately look up an artist named Peaches.

I dpn’t catch your “Period” theory, Frisky. The blood came from under her breasts and at the end she played dead. Nothing about menstrual cycle there..

that was horrifying.  and not the period bit.

it was, as intended, reminiscent of her being shot, crucified, risen, and hung.  and it was horrifying.  there is no pleasure in violence.  at the end, she looked dead—as intended.  bloody and dead.

there is no pleasure in violence.
