Kanye West Rains On Taylor Swift’s MTV Video Music Awards Parade

The MTV Video Music Awards were on for less than 30 minutes when ... CONTROVERSY. The first category of the night was “Best Female Video,” and Taylor Swift won for “You Belong With Me” over Beyonce‘s “Single Ladies” and Lady Gaga‘s “Poker Face.” Taylor started giving her “I’m just a country singer” acceptance speech, when Kanye West entered from stage left. He grabbed the mic out of Taylor’s hands and said, “I congratulate you Taylor, but I gotta say ... Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.”

As he ran off stage, Taylor Swift looked close to tears and the audience began to boo. For the rest of the night, anytime Taylor’s name was mentioned, she got a standing ovation, and whenever Kanye’s came up, there were boos. Which was exceptionally funny when Diddy read Kanye’s name for “Best Hip Hop Video” and when the crowd started hissing, he seemed really confused and begged, “What did I say?” The night culminated with Beyonce, the eternal class act, receiving the award for “Video of the Year.” “I remember being 17 and up for my first Video Music Award with Destiny’s Child. It was one of the greatest moments of my life,” she said. “Which is why I’d like Taylor to have hers.” And then Taylor came out to do her speech for real.

Overall, I just have to wonder—was this moment a set-up? As the original interaction went down, the cameras cut furiously between Taylor, Beyonce, and Kanye in a way that seemed a bit staged. Plus, are we really to believe that Beyonce is the nicest human being in the universe? This smacks of Eminem and Bruno at the Movie Awards, no? And that was revealed a few days after the show to have been a hoax.

I dont think it was a setup. Kanye west has been known to be erratic and state his opinion at inopportune times.

Correct me if im wrong but wasn’t Kanye the one on that Ktrina fundraiser with Michael Myers where he spouted his opinion unscripted and unbeknownst to the producers? I just remember Michael Myers looking very, very confused.

I didn’t think it would be possible for Chris Brown to have any remote competition for the Douchenozzle of the Year award, but Kanye never ceases to amaze.  Why do we give this guy the opportunity to do things like this?  Oh right, because we continue to support his music and entertainment.  I know I certainly won’t after last night.

If it were a setup, Kanye would be kind of not smart to take the roll of the idiot man.  If it were not a setup, Kanye is truly a male nut.  He has been on the down the Greek tragedy the-down-fall-of-a-hero ramp for awhile now.  He is going down, down, down.

Too bad. I do like his music.

Yes kanye said ‘george bush doesn’t care about black people’ during the fundraiser…this also isn’t his first awards show outburst, I believe he has pulled similiar stunts at the mtv europe awards and the grammy awards…

basically kanye west is a completely classless, self involved jerk. but, even though there is all this backlash against him right now, give it a couple weeks, people will be back to kissing his ass again just like they do with most other celebrities. ughhh…

Beyonce showed amazing class, while Kayne was just being an ass.  No she didn’t win best female video, but she won video of the year, so Kanye can suck it because in my book Beyonce got the award that showed that her video was amazing.

This was absolutely staged.  During these award shows, something controversial ALWAYS happens- be it an outburst by Kanye or a scandalous makeout with Britney.  Why else was Taylor Swift waiting backstage when Beyonce called her up?

MTV is losing relevancy and needs to stage these outrageous stunts to keep viewers watching so that advertisers keep paying for commercials during the reruns.  It’s brilliant… it was the first thing I heard my coworkers talking about this morning.

Kanye is always a jerk, prompted by “stunts” or not. He has no concept of reality and how people are supposed to behave in public. So if it was a stunt, then Beyonce gets to be a class act and Taylor gets to be charming and good for them. If it wasn’t a stunt, then I hope Kanye gets a bunch of backlash for being a big jerk.

Ooo, can I share my why-I-despise-Kanye-West story?
Having worked at my university’s radio station, I had the opportunity to be a ‘bouncer’ at a show that Kanye did on his “College Dropout” tour at a small women’s college.  I didn’t know who he was at the time, but I figured I’d sign up for it.  Well, being the shortest gal in the group, I didn’t end up outside, but rather backstage as one of the gophers for Kanye and his entourage.  The man was the most contemptible maniac I have ever seen.  After he through bottles of water at me and another girl because they weren’t what he wanted, I told him where he could stick it because I wasn’t being paid to babysit a three year old with the case of the tantrums… and the other girl and I walked off.  We understood that he refuses to ever perform on our campus again.  The administrators of the yearly concerts would really prefer he never did, so it’s a win-win.
Seriously, he can fade into obscurity any day now.

It wasn’t staged.  Taylor was waiting off stage when Beyonce got her award because the producers of the show asked her to wait there.  She had no clue what was going on.  The producers probably felt bad because she wasn’t able to finish her acceptance speech.  Notice how they quickly cut to Tracy Morgan and Eminems clip when Kanye grabbed the mike?  It was all jumbled.  Besides, Kanye may be an egomanical jerkoff, but he isn’t stupid.  Why would he risk a ton of backlash for the sake of a hoax?  And a stupid hoax at that, if it was.  No, he did it because he can’t control himself.  The look on Taylor’s face alone was enough to convince me it was real.  I’m done with Kanye.  He can disappear for all I care.

As to the topic at hand: I think the man simply has impulse control issues that have been made worse by the fact that no one puts him in his place. I feel sorry for Taylor, but, in the end, I think this will be a good thing for her in terms of the goodwill that will come her way.

Did anyone read his “apology”.  He’s “sorry” but likes to keep it real. It didn’t seem like much of an apology. I mean, telling Taylor Swift you’re sorry and that she’s talented doesn’t really mean anything since he basically then says that he just like to keep it real and point out who’s really the best and that’s just the way he is, blah, blah, blah…He’s such an ass. Indeed, do you like fish sticks, Kanye?

Kanye West is a grade A jackass. His behavior in general (the Katrina comment, “I don’t read books, but you need to read mine”, now this incident) is indicative that no matter how much money you have, it won’t buy you class…which he sorely, sorely lacks. Nice job making a teenager cry, Kanye. Bet that makes you feel like man, doesn’t it? @@

People should stop reinforcing his behavior by no longer buying his albums. Maybe when he’s facing foreclosure on his “crib” or repossession on his fancy cars, he’ll realize that, “You know, maybe I should start being nicer to people after all.”

Given his supposed (I only say supposed because I don’t watch award shows) propensity to outburst and other awards shows tendency towards weird controversy, why isn’t there someone to stop fools like him from rushing the stage like that? I mean sure, if there was someone, then he could have stood up on his chair and shouted it, but still…

I’m glad that if it wasn’t a hoax that Taylor handled it with such grace and Beyoncè took the moment to be a classy human being and lead by example as to how to treat others.

I doubt it was a set up, he does something like this every so often when god forbid a black artist is trumped by a white artist, and even worse a white country singer. He does seem to have a chip on his shoulder for anything outside his ‘urban, pop culture history making’ genre. He can’t even admit when he’s wrong and properly apologize, Beyonce is an amazing artist but she’s had awards and praise and it’s been proven she’s good so why is it so wrong for a new artist to prove their worth, he wouldn’t have done that had Taylor been black, African American or a minority. I have nothing against African Americans and the minority’s i just have something against him. There are places for people like him and medications to fix it, he needs to check himself in sometime soon. I have no idea how Amber Rose puts up with his ‘you are mine, you have to be on par with my god like status, I AM GOD’ attitude. I’ve never wanted to smack someone so much in my life. The least he could do is shut the #&@$% up, use spell check, turn the caps lock off and apologize properly to the girl. He’d have thrown a hairy fit had someone done that to him after winning something. I think it’s fair to say Chris Brown is out of the doghouse spotlight for a while.

I don’t think Kayne’s tantrum was staged, but I do think publicists and managers worked like crazy to coordinate Beyonce calling up Taylor at the end.  After all, she could’ve invited Taylor on stage sometime during or after her performance right?  And note that they both happened to have on beautiful - and beautifully coordinated - red dresses.  Classy move on Beyonce and MTV’s part to salvage the damage done to Taylor’s moment.  Staged, but classy.  As for Kanye, well the less said about him the better.  Let’s ignore him and maybe he’ll go away.

@ Riley, you basically explained the conundrum I have of why people think Mo’nique is a great comedienne.

@Isabela Laval
I agree with what you said but I think part of the reason Kanye is acting out is that he hasn’t dealt with the death of his mother, the sole person that raised and supported him. I’m not excusing his behavior but he basically lost the only person that provided emotional support and could also check him, put him in his place and TELL KANYE’S ASS TO SIT THE #&@$% DOWN!

He is a lost little boy with fame, money, cars and women- they’re all just toys to him- he doesn’t have anything real anymore. The limelight is all he has left; he’s a talented artist IMO but his Achilles’s Heel will always be his insurmountable Ego and it’s soooooo obvious now that vanity and pride are his weaknesses.

As much as I felt for Taylor Swift because she’ll never get that moment back, I feel bad for Kanye because he’s so pathetic, overinflated and believes in his own hype. Kanye West is a great artist but in his mind he thinks he’s like MJ or the Beatles. You really can’t say anything to someone so lost in their delusional imagery. All you can do is watch them fall.

Contrary to popular belief, Kanye was actually advertising Zune during the VMA awards. The real quote was,

“I’m gonna let you finish, but the Zune HD has some of the best video of all time!”

Unfortunately, Apple, amassing billions of dollars in revenue, had already instigated covert ops behind the scenes of all major television viewing stations. Coupled with Apple’s highly advanced data transfer network (which allows them to anonymously view the computer going-ons of 98% of all computer owners in the world) they were already aware of Kanye’s predisposition to Microsoft products. Combined with Kanye’s extremely outspoken personality, there was enough threat generated that they were already prepared to take defensive measures before the awards had even begun.

As one of the world’s authorities of sound emitting devices, they simply hacked into Kanye’s microphone via the VMA sound system, and overdubbed his mentioning Zune with, instead, a reference to Beyonce (the #1 music video seller in the iTunes store). Notice Kanye’s pause and resulting confused expression as he realizes that somehow the audience thinks he is promoting Beyonce’s new video. Afterwards, Apple caught up with Mr. West and offered him a 5% cut of future iPhone sales if he went along with it. Apple, you have reached an all time low. A dirty trick indeed!

Talent is not just for a chosen few (as he himself would like to place himself and others who he pertains above all in his closed untouchable Club)... Taylor Swift Rightly deserved her award and Handle the situation with grace. Unlike the Ungentlemanly ugly spectacle (put that into a Rap!) thrust upon us….

Saying that I personally think lessons have been learn’t by Kanye West, life is so short at the end of the day and life is all about lessons…
