Jon & Kate Plus A Sweatshop?

Jon & Kate Plus 8

First came the sordid affairs, then the looming divorce, and now a possible lawsuit? The Pennsylvania Department of Labor is looking into claims that the Jon and Kate Gosselin are violating child labor laws by having their lil’ army of kids work 40 weeks out of the year.

While we don’t exactly know if being themselves in front of camera crews constitutes as “work,” people are pretty up in arms about the situation. After the jump, the onslaught begins.

  • Bonnie Fuller said on the The Huffington Post:
“Have Jon and Kate Gosselin invented a new form of 21st century child abuse? I’d say so. They’re a real life ‘Truman Show’ with eight voiceless victims.”
You know it’s really serious when a rag mag maven cares about someone’s privacy.
  • Aunt Jodi and Uncle Kevin Krieder, Kate Gosselin’s brother and sister-in-law, claimed on CBS’s Early Show:
“The kids are being exploited. Kids on movie and professional TV sets are subject to child labor laws. Children in reality shows are NOT.”
Not a good sign when your own family thinks you’re whack.
  • Star reported this disturbing anecdote in their June 8th issue:
“8-year-old Mady had a meltdown as Jon tried to leave the house to run errands. She screamed that she didn’t want Jon to leave her, that she didn’t want to stay with her mom.”
Apparently TLC’s cameras caught the whole tragic scene, but decided not to air it. Thank you, TLC. That is not my idea of entertainment.

Here’s hoping that the Gosselin sweatshop will soon be closed for business. Oh and please…OctoMonster, learn from this experience and stop working on your reality show now, before it’s too late. [Us Weekly]

Why is it a problem when the Gosselins do it but not all of the other people who have reality shows with kids in them. I mean even looking at TLC itself there is the show about the Duggars who are probably violating some type of law just by the fact that they keep getting pregnant—on purpose. And there is also little people big world and that new show about the family with 10 kids (I think its 10). And lets look at some other networks-I just saw a commercial earlier about a show called raising sextuplets on We. Are they going to be dragged through the media mud, followed by paparazzi, and investigated for violating child labor laws too?

The fact that people even care about the Gosselins this much is indicative of bigger problems. Their show is on freaking TLC for crying out loud. Yes its popular, but that doesn’t make them celebrities. The media is turning them into celebrities. I’m sure Kate enjoys the attention, but if she really was such a media whore she probably would have started actively talking to the media and publicly “exploiting” her family a long time ago.

Wait…how exactly are the Duggers violating anything by having children they want and can afford?

The “media” makes me laugh. Where was their “concern” 5 seasons ago? Oh, that’s right…no one cared and it wasn’t a news/money maker. I don’t think filming the kids outings and normal play is “work” (though the DoL can look into it if they want). It’s not even like the cameras are there all day, every day anyway.

LOL at Mady’s tantrum too. Why is the Star reporting that, again? They should report EVERY child’s “mommy/daddy don’t leave” tantrums (ESPECIALLY precious pre-teen/teens that try to manipulate their parents to get what they want). That would keep them busy.

It sounds like the Gosselins have issues, but I don’t think we really know what state the family is in. Everything we’re hearing is produced, edited and packaged for profit.

And Kate Gosselin’s brother and sister-in-law would be a lot more convincing if they weren’t airing their opinions on national TV.

I agree with Puck - this show has been going on for five years, and people are JUST questioning the child labor laws?? I think most people never even heard of this show until recently. Since I don’t get cable, I didn’t even hear about it until last year when a co-worker mentioned it. The question is, does being filmed while going about your day-to-day business constitute “work”?

There is alot being said and i think that everyone needs to let them be and stop making money off of them and making them out to be these monsters and things.. Everyone else that have shows on tv don’t get this much attention just because they are having problems they have to make it 10 times wories for not only them but the hole family.. people need to realize they are a normal family having problems like everyone else in the world nothing new.. Just leave them alone found a new story..or something..
