Is This The New 15?
Is this what 15 looks like these days? The other day, I came across this post on Fashion Copious, one of my favorite fashion blogs. It was titled: “The Lips! & The Sphere Of Her Stomach.” Its subject is Lindsay Wixson, a bee-stung-lipped, baby-faced, up-and-coming model who could be the Next Big Thing. She’s 5’10” (or 5’11”, depending on the site). She has blond hair and blue-green eyes. And she’s 15. I was kind of, well, astonished. To call her precocious would be a bit of an understatement. She looks both very young and very mature at the same time. Which made me wonder: Is this what 15 looks like in 2009? Anyway, is it just me, or do you, too, think 15 is looking very grownup, indeed? Except at 0:13 when u get a glimpse of her busted teeth. I hear braces soon… that may delay her career, well not in Europe.

eh…why are lips like that considered sexy or pretty? I think its weird looking, like her mouth didn’t develop from since she was a toddler.
Maybe it’s just me getting old, but I feel like teenagers now all look like they’re 12. I look around on the road and think 13 year olds are driving, but they must be 16 obviously. Is that what I looked like?

It looks like she brushes her teeth with a hammer.

Well, yeah she doesn’t look fifteen but those teefers… MAN! lol. Anyway, Kate Moss started modeling when she was 14 so it’s probably not that uncommon in big-name modeling for young girls to look that old. But those teeth….

I think she is gorgeous. Why is everyone freaking out? It’s not like this young woman ASKED to develop into a beautiful person so early in life.

I didn’t think she was anything special, but then when she did the walk away from the camera…ick. Her legs! My legs are pretty skinny, but at least two or three of hers could fit into mine. Sheeshers. Eat a burger.

I thought it was my imagination about her teeth. I was like whoa! What was that? I think she looks like a bratz doll.
Just slap on some dark lip liner and metallic eyeshadow and I think we are all set!

Her legs fit her body. Not a whole lot she can do about her teeth without braces. Put yourself in a video online so the rest of the world can condemn you based on physical attributes. I’m sure all of you have amazing teeth and bodies; obviously shining personalities are already there.

As a teenager, she should be spared the unbridled criticism…at least in the Frisky corner of the interwebs!
You should’ve seen my teeth at 15…except I was 5’4 and 165. Ah, adolescence. Wixon is a beautiful girl…I’d kill to have that bod.

I guess she looks more adult than some 15 year olds but like others said a lot of models start their careers at that age so this doesn’t seem that suprising.
What’s more shocking are the nasty comments about the girl’s body. If a plus size model’s video were up here and commenters were saying “My legs are thick but I’ve got nothing on her, damn, get on on a treadmill” everyone would totally flip out. Why is it ok to only ridicule a skinny girl and assume she is unhealthy, but no one better dare try the same with a big girl?

I actually think she looks 15. Sure she has a more sophisticated look than most teens, but she has a baby-ish face and a skinny, virtually curve-less body that a lot of teens that age have (my legs used to be just as skinny as hers - ugh!).

She’s not any different than a fifteen year old Brook Shields in the Calvin Klein ads in the 80’s. Models are ALWAYS going to look older/sexier than their non-model counter-parts.

I remember when I was 14, a freshman in high school, the 18-year-old seniors seemed to look like they were practically 30! But when *I* was a senior, I and my classmates seemed to still look 14. It’s just all relative.
And depending on who you talk to, most models we see on runways or in magazines are 15 to begin with. That’s why they’re so annoyingly skinny.

@sadie: agreed. women hate on naturally (healthy) skinny chicks and say #&@$% like “eat a hamburger.” Yet somehow it’s not not cool to say a plus size girl should eat less hamburgers.
This girl looks 15. she also just happens to look like a model.
being tall with a model face and walking CONFIDENTLY in a bikini probably makes her look more mature than a regular 15-year-old.
I didn’t walk like that in a bikini when I was 15, though my teeth did look better (thanks braces).

@sadie and @Develange: You are both totally correct. I would never say something like that to an overweight woman. Ever. And while you both have definitely encouraged me to think more before I say something potentially hurtful, I do think it’s more likely that she’s not eating as she normally would to maintain her thin figure than an overweight person would be purposely eating a bunch to gain weight. Unfortunately our society and culture have placed values on women/girls to make them go to unhealthy means to stay/get skinny and not the other way around.

it seems as if most of the people who criticise her do so because they’re uncomfortable with something that doesn’t seem “normal.” people don’t become successful at ANYTHING for being normal, her lips, her legs, her teeth make her unique and for those who have a real eye-the photographers and fashion designers- that is thrilling. nobody looks at normal, nobody stops and asks themselves questions about normal. what is beautiful? abandon your comfort zone, or be doomed to a life of criticising things you would be better off paying attention to.
as for her weight, i have seen this girl, yes in person, eat an entire quart of ice cream IN ONE SITTING. she can out-eat a grown man. her legs had to get that long somehow. also, she comes from several generations of naturally skinny women who eat what they want. its ok to admire something rather than condemn it because its not reality for you.
she is mature and intelligent and if her look reflects that, good. i wish one of her agencies would post a video of her talking casually, maybe then everyone could get the big picture.

@pathofhands: You have to love the anonymity of the internet. I’ve had the utmost pleasure of attending the signing the Declaration of Independence.
Big whoop what you ‘saw’.

the whoop is that not all skinny girls are anorexic, and the more people who understand that sometimes reality isn’t what they expect, the better. the truth is that she is a sweet and healthy girl, as are many young models. i think anorexia is an awful problem, but my sister definitely doesn’t have it. thanks to the wonders of the internet i have the opportunity to see what people are saying about her and help them understand what a girl such as herself is all about. thank you, sadie, for also making a valid point.
