Inside The National Cougar Convention

Cougar

When Courteney Cox is banking her post-“Friends” career on a show titled “Cougar Town,” you know the trend of older women dating younger men has reached its tipping point. The term cougar isn’t just a punchline anymore. And why should it be? As Demi Moore might say, “what’s wrong with women asserting their sexual needs and romantic desires with younger partners?”

If cougars are here to stay, where better to gain insight into their mating habits than the National Single Cougars Convention? The gathering, held in Palo Alto, California, brought together over 250 cougars and “cubs” (younger, presumably nubile men). While the good folks from the Society of Professional Singles have been holding local cougar parties for several years, the cougar convention was the first to take the event national (and even international; cougars flew in from as far away as the UK to attend). That’s a lot of cougars. I can’t even imagine the or- nevermind.

I’m all for a “Harold and Maude” or “Stella-gettin-her-groove-on” situation if that’s what floats your boat. However, the whole convention idea seems to smell of desperation on both sides.

Don’t get me wrong, I had a cougar christening once. She was fifty-six. However, there was no “ick” factor. Kinda like Demi and Ashton. Unless you consider Ashton icky.

I guess I was a Cougar-ette, since I was with a 19 year old guy when I was 28. People tell me I look younger than I actually am so he thought I was the same age as him and… well, you know.

@effing hickster, the smell of desperation is quite potent along with oxytocin. My situation did not fair out well at all. He was too immature (suprised?) and I was too needy/insecure and couldn’t see it for what it was…a good #&@$%!

Therefore, I’m looking for someone close to my age- don’t want to be at the sandbox(erm, freshmen orientation) looking for dates.

@magenta: Yeah, I know. I’ve got a real babyface, so I often find myself having to “self-police” by telling twenty-something women that I’m old enough to be their father.

It’s kind of like sitting in front of a box of doughnuts. Yeah, you could, but you know you shouldn’t.

This is nothing new in the Pacific Northwest.  It’s common for the gal to be at least 7 to 10 years older than her husband is.  We have good jobs, and nice homes, why not decorate it with a guy who goes with the decor?

Besides, who wants a man your own age, who just might be: Bitter, as it lots of baggage, and worse, he has kids with an ex.

Gals, you do not need that baby mama-drama.

Besides, older women are doing what older men, when they had ALL the money and power used to do:  Picking the best of the litter.

I like cougars.  They occasionally run through my yard and leave a scent trail that gives my Redbone many deliriously happy, smelly hours of fun.  In the context of this article, I wouldn’t want to be labelled one.  It gives new meaning to the saying “long in the tooth”.

@bearclover: Well, it beats the names they have for men who fraternize with younger women; ones like Dirty Old Man, or Pervert.

@effing hickster True, and it also beats being called a MILF.  That one makes me feel creepy.  I don’t mind a few years age difference, but a guy young enough that I would be considered a cougar in the relatinship- no way.  And forget the ones that hit on me and my daughter at the same time.  Gah-ross!

Being a Cougar does not necessarily mean MILF.  smile

Personally I think this is a total non-issue.  Older women have been dating younger men for a long time.

I really don’t think anyone really cares.

What works for all the participants is good enough.
