I’m One Big Home Design Mistake
Nick Olsen, former Domino blogger and an assistant designer to the amazingness that is Miles Redd, came up with a list of first-timer decorating mistakes forThe Washington Post. Now, since I’ve painted and re-done my bedroom no less than four times over the past year, I considered myself to be over that beginner mistake hump. Ha, think again. As I went down his totally-helpful list, I realized that at one point in my life or another (and even right now, as I look up at a mirror hung horizontally over my couch) I’ve made every single one of the mistakes! Live and learn, I guess—but check his list out, it’s totally solid design advice! [The Washington Post]

More tips: If you’re going to pain a deep color, USE PRIMER. I know you wanna save a buck, but trust me, the deeper the color, the more blotchy it will turn out after two coats and you’ll have to go back for a second gallon of pain to cover it up. Save yourself the trip and use primer.

Another tip: less is more. I significantly pared down my belongings when I packed all my stuff in my cavalier and moved 2,000 miles away. My bf is a bit of a clean freak/minimalist, and our house feels so clean, open, and roomy that I don’t think I’ll ever go back to ... whatever one could collectively call the alternatives to minimalism.
Also, removing upper kitchen cabinet doors can be a really, really great thing, especially if you have supercute dishes (I do!). It’s cheap, takes very little time, is reversable (for you renters or indecisives), shows off your stuff, makes things really easy to find, and opens up another field of depth.
