How Unemployment Can Improve Your Style

There’s no doubt about it. Getting laid off sucks. What happens next is the stereotypical lifestyle of depression, daytime television and sweatpants. This may be fine for a week or two, but after a while you will start to go crazy and feel disgusting.

We would never say, “Hey! Awesome! You lost your job!” Though, we do believe you can get something out of this time of unemployment for yourself. And if you look on the bright side, believe it or not, you might find yourself looking a whole lot hotter. After the jump, check out our suggestions.

  1. Concentrate on your skin. Since you’re not going to an office every day, you’re giving your skin a big break in two ways: 1.) You’re not constantly answering/making calls, meaning you’re keeping your face away from harmful phone bacteria; 2.) You don’t need to be wearing makeup on a daily basis. If you’re the type who slabs on some foundation five to six times a week, you’ll begin to notice a difference in your skin tone and brightness when you go without it for days at a time.
  2. Class up your beauty routine. Since you’re not wearing makeup as often (and thus replacing it as frequently), why not invest in something nice? For example, if your morning go-to is a bottle of Revlon foundation, why not opt for the Chanel instead? While this may sound a bit counter-intuitive, it might make you feel like you’re putting your money into something that matters a bit more.
  3. Go to the doctor. Take care of yourself. How many times have you put off going to the dermatologist or seeing a nutritionist because you just don’t have time to leave the office during the day?
  4. Work out. You have time during the day now, so also use it to take care of your body. Go out for a run. If you’re a yoga buff, look into community classes in your area, which often take place during the day and to which you might have previously said, “Awesome idea, pricey yoga studio, but I’ll never be able to make your $2 and 2 p.m. class.” Now you can! Sweating it out will also help improve your skin.
  5. Take advantage of the fact that you have time to choose outfits wisely. When you’re rushing straight from work to happy hour or an event, and there’s no time to change, you easily end up overdressed or just a bit sloppy from a day at the office. Take your time getting ready to go out, and enjoy the fact that you’ll look the freshest and most presentable of all your friends.

I’ve been laid off since June and have made a commitment to myself to dress better now that I’m unemployed.  Anything went at my casual office, but now I can wear all the cute skirts and dresses I want without feeling out of place.  The added bonus is that it makes me feel good about myself!

Something else I’m doing for my self at the end of this month is taking a trip to Paris smile.  with not a job interview in sight since my lay off I’ve decided to do this for me.

What planet do you live on where foundation matters more than rent, student loans, or groceries?

Wow… This is borderline insensitive to those who are suffering (and it is suffering) the effects of a layoff/staff reduction. I haven’t really seen an article on here about how to support a friend who’s lost their job (There was some article on how to support your man…)

Try looking at this from a different perspective, if this were about something that can be as (and more more) traumatizing it’d be like putting this list together:

10 great things about losing a baby!
10)Your skinny jeans fit again!
9) Martinis anyone?
8) Post-sex cigarette
7) At least you know he’s not the father!
6) OMG no stretch marks!
... I can’t even go on in the name of humor. Bad move Frisky. Tisk. Tisk.

I’m pretty sure this article isn’t about making fun of unemployed people. It’s more about finding the positive in what is mostly considered a very negative situation, and trying to boost up your self esteem during a time when you probably feel pretty inadequate in some way.

yeahhh no need to get too sensitive friends.  i think this article is written assuming that you have some sort of savings/severance package.  bummer if you don’t (i know i sure as hell don’t!!) but no need to get offended.  i think the idea is to use this time to take care of yourself as well as you always wanted to.

i’m going to add a couple of things to the list:

6) clean out your closet - take the nicer items to a consignment shop (yay for a little extra cash in your pocket) and donate the rest

7) start COOKING - now that you have to cut back on your expenses, start cooking your own meals.  that’s right: 3 meals a day, 7 days a week.  you will save a BOATLOAD of cash (i spend $200 for almost 3 weeks worth of food), eat better than you ever have before, and learn a new skill to boot.  it may seem like a chore at first but it becomes addictive.

8) rock out your resume - take the time to make your resume and cover letter truly stellar.  i know this sounds obvious but bear with me.  if you grab a friend that is maybe a little further up in the career ladder than you (not necessarily in the same field) he or she may have some awesome advice on how to pimp out your resume and interview skills according to what they often find most appealing in candidates that they consider.

9) catch up on your reading - not any reading mind you.  if you work in the health field why don’t you go through that stack of medical journals sitting on your coffee table.  if you work in finance, now is the time to peruse the last 6 months of Money magazine that you haven’t touched.  you may learn some fascinating new tidbits that will be just the thing to drop in an interview.

10) take a class - i’m not talking about basketweaving (unless of course you are a basketweaver by trade.  in which case, carry on).  but i mean take a quickie certification course at your local community college.  you will learn something new, have something new and unique to put on your resume, and NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK.

rock on unemployed sisters, if you keep yourself busy adding as much to your skill set as possible you will come out on top of this!  at least that’s what i’m hoping…...
