How To Keep Your Hair Soft And Shiny In The Winter

Frizzy hair

The air is becoming cold and dry and that’s messing with your hair, right? From flyaway strands to dry scalp-induced dandruff, the war is officially on. Tackle the dried-out rat’s nest you used to call your hair with these tricks and products:

  • If you’re starting to look legitimately dried out, a weekly or bi-weekly deep conditioner is a good idea. We like this “hair smoothie” by Carol’s Daughter.
  • Once a month, whip out a hot oil treatment for immediate silky smoothness.
  • For run-of-the-mill dry hair, keep in mind that you should be conditioning every time you wash. Go with a deep moisturizing formula for extra impact and to tame some of the stray strands.
  • I’m not a dandruff-riddled person until the frigid temps start. Then I have a week or two of icky white flakes which, with black clothes, are just not welcome. Or I did, anyway. Now, I crush aspirin into a fine powder, pour it into my shampoo bottle and solve the situation in a couple days. I was skeptical, but it really works well. And fast.

Another good tip is to rinse your conditioner out with cool water instead of hot, that makes SHINE!

I love Carol’s Daughter’s hair smoothie too!

If you have chronically dry locks, particularly if you are a curly girl or have waves or kinky hair, coconut oil makes a wondrous & affordable weekly hot oil treatment. Having a big jar of this on hand is way better than squeezing out those microscopic hard to handle tubes- less waste, more product, better value. The trick with coconut oil is to make sure it is very warm- not HOT (it is oil, be careful).

If you’re ready to really really change out your hair care routine, a hair care philosophy that has recently come into vogue involves ditching shampoo altogether & focusing on conditioning only- the “No-Poo” approach. If this wigs you out, consider the beautiful coats of many animals & the pretty sheen they retain by failing to remove natural oils from their pelts with harsh shampoos a few times a week.

For me, my best miracle treatment is Leonor Greyl Bamboo shampoo & Ojon’s Deep Restorative Conditioning Treatment.

Another pretty awesome trick I recently learned for dealing with those pesky white flakes that are caused by the fall/winter dehydration - apple cidar vinegar !  After you wash your hair, while still in the shower, (I like to use the same bottle applicator you would to apply hair dye to your roots) use the bottle to squirt the vinegar onto your scalp and massage gently.  Let it sit for 10-15 mins (in the meantime, wash your body, shave, etc etc.) then rinse it out and follow with conditioner/any other hair treatments you normally use after washing your locks.  It cleans your scalp really, really well ! It gets rid of any dead skin and leaves your head feeling squealy clean. (side note: in case your worried of a funky vinegar smell being left behind, in my expereince, there’s only a subtle scent left behind and after you’ve used your conditioner and hair oil/other hair products after the shower, it covers up any hints of vinegar left)

@mineola - I shampoo MAYBE once a month but I condition every other day…my frizziness has decreased exponentially!

@peanut I am going to have my SO try that he has TERRIBLE dry scalp all year long due to our well water but it is so much worse in the winter.  I am going to have him give it a try.

I wash my hair every other day and deep condition once a week, year round and it helps a lot.
