Hot Topic: Miley Cyrus In Vanity Fair

Miley Cyrus/NY Post

Alright guys, what do you think of this whole Miley Cyrus/Vanity Fair/Annie Leibovitz debacle? To refresh: Leibovitz shot the pop star for the magazine draped only in a sheet, very little makeup, and tossled hair. No matter which way you cut it, the photo certainly is provocative. It’s also beautiful, but really, wouldn’t expect anything less from a photographer of Leibovitz’s caliber. All that said, Cyrus is 15-years old. Regardless of whether her minders or grandmother or parents were at the shoot, isn’t it kind of...odd...for a magazine or a photographer to suggest sexy look in the first place?

It’s pissing me off that so much of the “blame” for this shoot is being put on Miley—she’s not even legally able to drive yet. It seems to me that VF and Leibovitz were capitalizing on the recent controversy surrounding Miley’s “sexuality” in the first place, which is a good move from a business standpoint, I suppose, but a crappy one in general. Now the Christian Coalition is saying that Disney should reprimand Miley for the shoot and that she should take more responsibility for her actions since so many kids look up to her. Do you guys agree? Do you think the responsibility should rest on someone else’s shoulders instead? Or do you think this is big deal over nothing? I’ll tell you one thing: if Perez Hilton calls Miley a slut one more time, we’re gonna get our gossip from somewhere else!

i’m with you kiki.  all in all; bad publicist.  not miley’s...annie’s.  who allowed her to take a picture of a 15 year old pop icon?  now that’s just wrong.  miley was LUCKY to have her image taken by this visionary artist of our time and if she realizes that caliber of photographer that AL is, later in life she’ll be mortified that she apologized for it.

i saw some footage from the shoot; she was wearing jeans and sitting on a stool with a strapless shirt on; the sheet was around her over that...unless i mistook whatever i saw (which could be it; who knows).

Reactions to this gentle, innocent photo really are a window into the soul.  As if a shot in which an adolescent’s BACK (gasp!) is visible is somehow trashier than the usual tartwear.  Can we please round up all the descendants of the Puritans, and feed them into a wood chipper already?

PS - this child can’t sing, can’t act, and is ugly.  Pffft!

I’m not bothered by the back exposure personally, but there’s something about the bedhead and ripe lips that looks sexual to me. That said, I’m 28 years old and if I find something in Miley’s music enjoyable, she’s probably a little more “adult” than parents would like to believe. Anyway, my thing is hasn’t Annie done this same damn shoot 100 times? It’s kind of her go-to—can’t think of anything to do? Wrap a sheet around the subject!
