Julianne Moore Wearing A Breton Shirt

Always fans of casual French style that still looks chic, we fell pretty hard for Erin’s French Mariner shirt, as she called it, when she wore it the other day (and again today). Also known as a Breton shirt, these classic boatneck-collared, striped shirts were made part of the French seaman’s uniform list in 1858. It has been mariners wore this style because the stripes made it easier to find a man who had fallen into the sea. We hope we don’t end up treading water in the Atlantic any time soon, but we’ll be pulling on one of the five sailor-style shirts below just in case.

Mariniere With Boat Neck, $85, Petit Bateau
Lightweight Wide-Neck Tees, $15, Old Navy
Original Breton Shirt, £25.95, Breton: The Original Breton Shirt Company
Naval II T-Shirt, $115, Saint James
Minquiers Breton Sailor Shirt $42.00, Brittany Boutique

I have the exact same shirt she’s wearing only much more form fitting with buttons in the sleeve to keep them rolled to 3/4 length.  Bought it in H&M about 2 years ago, I think.

These look much better on women, unless you’re built like Jean Claude van Damme (either sex).

@bumbler: Ha ha! Although I’m not sure what I’d do with a pole that big.

Is anyone else thinking that that shirt made a woman who is obviously rail-thin (check out those legs) look like a big, white, square?  No, thanks.

Paddling.  Take that any way you’d like.

@BlueVibe; Exactly what I was thinking. I’ve just recently been noticing that a lot of the fashion suggestions this site gives are terrible in my opinion. =/

Wow, I just got rid of one of these because it made me look fat.
