So Long, Erica Hahn
Last week, we looked at the über-emotional post-coital scene between new lesbians Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Dr. Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith) on “Grey’s Anatomy.” Their good sex isn’t going to last very long, though. Dr. Hahn is leaving Seattle Grace this Thursday.
Michael Ausiello writes on EW.com that a source said the show’s network, ABC, wasn’t comfortable with the explicit direction the Callie/Erica relationship was taking. We thought the way the characters spoke about lesbian sex in code was pretty funny, but some EW.com commenters are glad Dr. Hahn is leaving (Terrie writes, “We should not have this type story line on shows that air while families are watching TV.”). People who are uncomfortable with gay relationships on network TV shouldn’t get too excited. “Grey’s Anatomy” series creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes said in a statement: “Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it’s not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show – Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke’s character would sustain in the long run.”
We can sort of see how Callie and Erica’s relationship wouldn’t have worked long-term—Erica seems more into Callie than Callie is into Erica. Interestingly enough, the show is introducing a bisexual character named Sadie, played by blonde hottie Melissa George. Whether or not she’ll hook up with Callie is yet to be seen, but if they do get together, I think it’ll look like what ABC really wanted was a young, beautiful lesbian—rather than the semi-manly Erica.

I don’t remember anything about the last episode foreshadowing that Erica was going to leave this week. If I’m right, and there was nothing on the show to lead me to believe that ahead of time (and I don’t think there was, since the last scene I remember between them was them being happy together and optimistic about their relationship), I’m kind of bummed that you wrote this big spoiler. I mean, I get that some people like spoilers, but there was no way for me to even avoid this. Not only was it not hidden behind a jump, but it was the title of the article - so I had no warning to keep from reading it.

@ Lynn: I am so sorry! I saw that she was leaving in a bunch of major places and it didn’t even occur to mean that it would be a spoiler!

I really don’t like her character. Too harsh.
I love the “can’t have this on tv while families are watching” Really? What about all of the drunken bed hopping/one night stands/cheating? That’s okay?

@Catherine - I read through that again and it sounded way harsher than I meant it to!

just would like to add to the cbass8 comment- a year or so ago when mcdreamy’s wife pinned what’s her faces underwear the the board it was all over E! and all these shows made a big deal about it so my 12 yr old nephew-in-law (does that exist?) took his underwear and pinned it to the kitchen to do list. kids watch and reenact like wizards.
