Glamour’s Plus-Sized Model Visits “Today”

Glamour has received loads of praise after publishing a photo in their September issue of plus-sized model, Lizzie Miller. Lizzie, along with Glamour‘s editor-in-chief, Cindi Lieve, was on “Today” this morning to talk about the positive response to the photo—which shows Miller naked, with un-airbrushed stomach pudge—and Lieve vowed that her magazine would be including more models like Miller in the future. Sounds amazing, but we’ll believe it when we see it!

All of this while it looks like they photoshopped Jessica Simpson on the cover.

Also, it’s not helping women’s self esteem when they are calling a size 12 a “plus size” woman.

It’s a step in the right direction, but still definitely sending mixed signals.

I gotta defend Glamour. Earlier this summer, they did a whole multiple-page swimsuit spread with Crystal Renn, my fave model who’s a size 12 or 14 and ridiculously gorgeous. (See it here: http://www.glamour.com/fashion/2009/04/thats-a-sexy-swimsuit?mbid=yshine_su#slide=1)

Most mags would never put swimsuits on a girl her size (which happens to be my size), and the fact that they did almost made me teary-eyed. She looks banging, and I hope they continue to show more women with a variety of shapes.

axdiva - It said she is between a 12 and a 14, and as far as I know a size 14 is sort of the “plus size” cutoff.

The picture was awesome, but honestly she still looks slim. Next to the interviewer and the mag editor it’s easy to see why she’s a 12/14 - she just seems like a tall, large girl in general.

Props to Glamour for printing this photo—the model is beautiful and I’m happy to see more magazines *not* photoshopping their models.  However, a 12/14 is not plus-sized (a 14 is generally the largest size in straight-size stores, but still).  How about showing a size 22 or so woman as a plus-size model?

Quite honestly I don’t think this is a big deal. Not yet, anyway. Glamour has a history of putting “plus-size” models in their magazines on a pretty consistent basis (one every three or four issues), however those models are only in the magazine while accompanying a body confidence article. In the same issue they’ll have the remark “It’s OK…To wonder why every woman on TV is a size 00.” next to a drawing of a woman who couldn’t fit in all of her organs if she were an actual person. I definitely won’t believe Cindi’s statement until I see it for myself.

it is pretty refreshing to see a normal looking woman getting media attention for something positive as this. she’s such a stunning girl. i’m appreciative and hopeful more magazines will feature women like her. keeping my fingers crossed! we’ll see. but calling her plus size is a little ridiculous. i gotta agree, i think it does kinda send a weird message.

I am delighted to see a normal sized young woman in a fashion magazine.  Many times I see either really skinny models or really heavy ones.  This girl is neither - she is like me.  I would tend to buy clothes when I see them on a real woman because I would have a better idea of how they would really fit.  I think we women should all put a kink in the plans of the businesses that make so much money by trying to use advertising campaigns to make women feel badly about themselves by manipulating public opinion.  I wonder why we accept the opinions of others who obviously have no concern for our health and welfare. When will we smarten up and refuse to buy their wares whether they be diet pills, magazines, clothes, gym memberships or whatever else they manufacture for fantasy women?

I think it’s great.  In real life she’s not plus sized at all.  She’s perfectly normal.  Now as far as real overweight people are concerned, read why I’m actually jealous of them.

I love the way she looks, like merrik said we’re used to very skinny or very heavy models but we rarely see models who are in between, i think a lot of women can relate to her because her size is very average…I only wish they would stop calling her plus size b/c thats like saying that other women who wear her size are “plus”
