Girls Kissing Girls: A “Disturbing New Trend”
In what must surely be the slowest of news days, the Daily Mail brings us an article today shedding light on the “disturbing” trend of girls kissing girls. Perhaps you’ve heard of this before? According to the article, same-sex kisses among teen girls has practically become a rite of passage ever since that shared kiss between Madonna and Britney Spears at the 2003 MTV Video Awards. “More than anything, the kiss gave the veneer of acceptance to what would previously have been considered unacceptably risque public behavior, and made a particular type of lipstick lesbianism almost fashionable.” Funny, I went to college years before that infamous kiss and girl-on-girl smoochin’ was “an almost fashionable rite of passage” back then.
The article is careful to point out that it’s not only hoodlums and gals from bad families on the wrong side of the tracks that engage in this kind of “dangerous” behavior — even “well-spoken” girls who go to “well-respected” private schools and come from “smart homes with professional parents” kiss other girls, the writer warns. It’s “becoming increasingly common for middle-class girls to flirt with a kind of faux lesbianism” and it’s all celebrities’ fault! From Britney and Madonna to Katy Perry and Megan Fox, celebrities intent on creating “another layer to the mystique,” have made it cool for girls to kiss girls. And lest you think iy’s just harmless experimentation, the article calls this behavior “disturbing” at least three times. Apparently, it’s also “shocking” and “insidious.” According to the writer, only a few of these young “lipstick lesbians,” which she defines as “someone pretending to be gay,” are “mature enough to deal with the complicated sexual issues surrounding such behaviour.” But they’re mature enough to deal with the complicated sexual issues surrounding, um, actual sex with guys?
So why do seemingly “nice” girls kiss each other, anyway? One 16-year-old girl told the Daily Mail that much of it has to do with impressing boys or showing off. Another teen girl said: “‘It’s really not such a big deal. Some of my girlfriends do kiss each other at parties - sometimes because they are drunk, sometimes because they think it will impress boys. It doesn’t mean at all that they’d go further in private. Just that they are happy with each other to be seen doing that. It is a way of showing off, or flexing their sexual muscles to prove they are not square and boring.” Well, they may think they’re being “terribly grown-up and cool,” the writer reports, but “the reality is that such behaviour can compromise both their dignity and self-respect.” Teen girls engaging in potentially embarassing behavior? Wow, that really is a shocking new trend! [via Daily Mail]

From the article: “Internet message boards in the U.S. were overloaded as mothers panicked about their daughters’ slumber parties turning into vast, experimental orgies.” As a father of two young girls, I’m pretty sure that if the worst thing I need to worry about in 5-10 years is that they’ll make out with friends at slumber parties, I’ll be alright.
Oh, who am I kidding? This… this insidious kissing of other girls… it’s _so_ much worse than, say, oral sex in elementary schools and drug use and pre-teen pregnancy and all that. I’m a bit disturbed by your flippant attitude, Wendy. You make it seem like it’s not actually horrific. It’s attitudes like yours - ones that make such hedonism seem OK - that pave the way for even more depraved acts, like, oh, girls holding hands or girls kissing puppies or girls seductively eating licorice.

It’s kinda lame to kiss another girl just to impress guys, but teenage girls do a lot of lame and not-so-lame things to impress guys. Whatever. It’s better than giving head in the bathroom.
I wonder how she would feel about Smith LUGs and BUGs…?

Agreed - girls kissing girls is pretty harmless in the perspective of stupid things we girls/women might do when drunk or to impress guys. And even if it is because a girl is into girls, that’s so not up to the “disturbing” and “insidious” labels.

I kissed many girls when I was a teenager and it was never to impress a guy. It was just out of curiosity. Or spin the bottle. And sometimes, we did it just because we were best friends, like a secret handshake. It also made for good practice for when we finally cornered that cute boy and wanted to plant a smooch on him without feeling inexperienced. I never once felt saddled with “complicated sexual issues”.

I think the girls (and most of the ones I’ve seen weren’t teenagers, but 19 years + who were old enough to go to bars) who feel the need to kiss other girls in bars are obnoxious. That is almost always for male attention, and it makes me want to throw my lime wedges at them. But girls kissing girls in general, regardless of their “true” sexual orientation is so not anyone’s business. Who cares? People do all kinds of things to experiment and I think that’s a healthy approach to sexuality. I’m not even suggesting that it needs to take place behind closed doors. I just think when it’s at a place like a bar, it’s not about the kiss, it’s about the audience.

Teen girls will be teen girls. Aren’t the teen years all about experimentation, peer pressure, confusion, obnoxiousness, shallowness and a general disregard for anything sanitary? Who cares if they kiss each other. The only thing it could lead to ((and this is the REAL scary part)) is out of control giggling. Thats where I have to draw the line!

@Queen Frostine: I agree. I have kissed many girls, and it was not to impress guys at all. Although I have also kissed girls in front of my boyfriend..but I would never do something (with a girl or not) because a guy wanted me to do it.
And it is so much more harmless than getting drunk and doing drugs. And there is some sort of thrill to it. I know for me, if my parents found out that I have kissed girls, they would not be too happy about it-because my parents would view that as too sexual and risque.

I kissed girls in high school… hell, I still do… oh wait… I’m gay. Damn me and my insidious behavior. I never kissed them to impress guys, but I did date guys just to fit in. I think that caused me more complicated sexual issues than kissing girls did.

The title of that article is just a huge cheap “READ ME NOW” gag. No information, all titillation, wrapped in stern finger-wagging. Who wrote that article, Cotton Mather?
