Is It Us, Or Are Domestic Violence PSAs Getting Stranger And Stranger?

Ever since the whole Chris Brown/Rihanna incident, we’ve been noticing more and more public service announcements coming out about domestic violence. Don’t get us wrong—that’s great. Except that the ads keep getting progressively weirder and grosser. Not convinced? Check out this ultra disturbing ad from April, which shows Keira Knightley getting beat down. Not for the weak of stomach.

I’m confused why you think this PSA is weird. It’s what domestic abuse is. It’s helping to show that although you may be friendly, confident, and successful in your work life, you can still be scared, isolated, and controlled in your personal life.

I actually really thought this was a good PSA, too. It actually shocked me a bit when I first saw it - which I think is the reaction this sort of thing needs to evoke.

I think it garners a shocking reaction, as misspixie said, but I think it was designed intentionally to do so.  The message though is clear and the portrayal is realistic.

I didn’t watch any of the other videos.  But I actually found the the Beneton add more disturbing.  Not sure why—maybe because of their age and we would all prefer to have blinders on in that regard—but that one bothered me the most.

I don’t find the dog one odd. It makes a point that boys who abuse animals often abuse wives/girlfriends in their relationships as they get older.

While this is not nec the message that was intended, some abusers DO find woman to be on the same level as animals. And make them feel that way. My father used to tell us we were worse than dogs, that at least dogs show appreciation for their masters. Yeah. masters, like he owned us.

I think if you’ve been in an abusive relationship, you can relate to aspects in each of those ads, which is the point. To help people in these relationships acknowledge their situation and encourage them to get out of it.

Years ago I saw a PSA on this subject that showed a guy drinking beer with his buddies on his deck.  Buddy #1 goes into the kitchen for another beer and sees wife with a banged up face.  He goes back to the deck and says “What happened to Sarah?”  Husband says “She walked into a wall or something”.  Buddy #2 says “What?!”.  Buddy #1 says “What you did was wrong”.  I like this one alot because it showed men exercising peer pressure for good - we saw what you did and it’s not all right.  The PSA wasn’t stomach turning and I thought the message was very clear.  Anyone else remember that one?
