Former Miss California Speaks Out On Gay Marriage
“The truth is that it is difficult to know for sure the intentions of the biblical authors, but we do know something about God. Those of us who know God through Jesus of Nazareth know that he went to great lengths to express God’s love to people who were labeled as outcasts. He spent time with children, prostitutes, and lepers, all of whom were labeled as outside of the grasp of the Holy. As we continue to seek God’s vision for us as a nation grounded in a love for justice, I pray that we might move closer to the cause of grace.”
So says Nicole Lamarche, who was Miss California in 2003 and is now an ordained minister at Cotuit Federated Church in Cotuit, Massachussettes. Lamarche spoke out on the issue of gay marriage after the current Miss California, Carrie Prejean, said she did not support gay marriage at Sunday’s Miss USA pageant, citing her religious beliefs. Much smarter of a response. Anyway the bible (New Testament) was written at almost 400 AD, most messages were lost or misinterpreted by then.

What an intelligent answer, while still being true to her beliefs.

Lamarche: Now, *she* knows how to practice AND preach… she’s the Miss Cal that represents me, and many like me.
Prejean: What a difference silicone, bleach and 6 years of conservative social decay make.

Anyone who is willing to make a commitment to live with another person should have the legal right to do so, and have all same the rights and privileges of men and women who are married. This word marriage varies a ton from country to country. In this country (USA) we enjoy protection from abuse and abandonment by rule of law. That to me is the essence of being married.
Being married also means much more than having a legal document. As one minister said to me “Marriage starts before the wedding”. My wife and I lived to gather for 8 years before a ceremony and paper signing took place. I cannot imagine not living with her no matter what our legal status is.
It is very gratifying to see a learned faith practitioner to support equality for all people.

@Fast Eddie - what about polygamy or incest? should people who chose that have the right to be married too?

@ michael: i think we can assume that he meant “consenting adult” before “willing to make a commitment.”

@bislane who’s not consent here? There are consenting adults out there that want multiple spouses or to marry a blood relative.

@ michael- alright, but i still don’t understand how gay marriage is comparable to EITHER

@michael - if all parties are consenting adults, why not?
Michael
wrote on April 26 2009 @ 07:05 am: [report]
@bislane - it’s not that either are comparable to gay marriage. it’s that people feel that the line has to be drawn somewhere. The most common argument you hear for why gay marriage should be allowed is that it’s between consenting adults, and that argument sets precedent that will eventually go beyond the realm of marriage.

This discussion is nonexistent if you do not hold to the fact that the scripture is the final authority. If God so grant you this understanding then the entire chapter of Romans Chapter one would open your eyes to see and ears to hear what the creator’s perspective and intent is on the subject of gay anything. In this chapter it also reveals that man in general has no excuse whether you understand scripture to be true or not due to the plain fact that God reveals his power and glory through His creation and law. This subject is not a matter of what you think is fair or right, it is a matter of what God established and commanded us as His creation to obey. We all will be held accountable no matter what you think from your own understanding. If this makes you hostile then I pray for the true God who made you to pore out His grace and mercy on you if it pleases Him and gives glory to His name.

Absolutely Paul is the one who instructed the women is to be silent in the church. However, give me chapter and verse as to his instruction on a woman is inferior. Your comment is loosely based on your own assumptions of the text. Again, if scripture is not your final authority further discussion is nonexistent and I leave you to your own understanding. My comments here are merly intended to remind those of their accountability to a sovereign just God of His perfect law and can only be fulfiled through Christ. No need to continue to convince of anything else.

@Gohst Rider: “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.” (Ephesians 5:22-24)

Also, Corinthians is funny because people like to use them at weddings, why, I don’t know.
“For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.” (I Corinthians 11:8-9)

@cheese: thanks for picking that up for me. couldn’t find my bible
@gohst rider: and YOUR comment is based on YOUR assumption that a 2000 year old book is a “final authority.” and i’m not sure how else i’m supposed to take that corinthians verse any other way other than “women are inferior.” and why else would he say women are supposed to be silent in church??

Again, scripture is clear not to use your own understanding and if you do you do not belong to Him. John 10:26 “The reason why you do not belive is because you are not of my sheep” Luke 18:18-27 “A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’” “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said. When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth. Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus replied, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.”
Sorry Bislane you must believe what is on your heart and nothing I can say or do will change it, only the sovereign God who established all things before the foundation of the world can change your heart.

Oh have you accepted Christ as your lord and savior AND sold all of your worldly possessions? Unlikely, as you still apparently have a computer. Get off the internet and leave it to us heathens.

@Gohst Rider - if you’re not using your own understanding when reading the bible, then you are exactly what you reference: a sheep. The bible is written by men and translated over and over, to take it at literal value is laughable.
I don’t buy any of it, but the intelligent christians I know (they exist!) find that questioning faith is how they make it stronger, not by just following step by step every little thing in the most literal ways. Btw, if you did follow every little thing and took scripture as final say, you’d keep kosher and stone a WHOLE lot of people ... or are you a typical pick and choose christian?
