Cindy McCain has been getting a great deal of attention for an outfit she wore to the Republican National Convention, which cost $300,000. Since, McCain and Michelle Obama make different, yet equally stylish fashion choices, we thought it was fitting to also give a price breakdown of one of Obama’s Democratic National Convention outfits. I think it’s a bit unfair that Cindy McCain is getting criticized for wearing “a $300,000 outfit” when 280,000 of that is the diamond earrings. Yes, those are definitely extravagant and definitely not something I can afford, but the $20,300 diamond earrings Michelle Obama wore are too.

Fashionwise, Cindy Lou’s outfit is an ambivalent mess of feminine power and powerlessness—part power bitch collar, and part girlish cocktail dress. It also makes me want to go sing in the rain.

CATH, I agree that I could not afford either Cindy’s or Michelle’s outfit. Do the math? Michelle’s outfit cost 1/5 of Cindy’s. Cindy’s inheritance only reinforces the fact that the McCain’s cannot understand what the common person faces daily. Michelle does have some idea. Her family background is one of sacrifice by parents who had to struggle like most American families do.

Wait a minute… two carat diamond earrings for Michelle Obama $20,300 and three carat for Cindy McCain are $280,000? One extra carat makes a $260k difference? Sure… ok.
