Fashion Emancipation: The Mantyhose

Pantyhose for Men, Mantyhose

Remember when we posted about men wearing skirts and some of you were concerned that guys’ legs are just too hairy to carry off the look? Well, Project E-MANcipate! has a solution: mantyhose. At the forefront of E-MANcipate!, a project “to accelerate the acceptance of male pantyhose as a regular clothing item,” is a push for hosiery manufacturers to create pantyhose designed specifically for men. “Don’t buy female pantyhose at all,” the E-MANcipate site urges. “Don’t strengthen those companies who don’t produce/sell male pantyhose. Buy male pantyhose. Do help with your purchasing power to those who are on your/our side.”

So, why are the men behind the project so adamant in their desire for mantyhose, so urgent in their need for others to join their side? The site gives three main reasons, listed after the jump…

For Sex-Appeal
Mantyhose proponents argue, “Guys could really show off their legs in a manly way, and make the fashion palette more colorful.” Boxer briefs and cargo shorts show off legs in a manly way. Pantyhose? Not so much.

For Their Health
“It helps to improve performance in sports or jobs related to heavy leg loads; it helps to survive long flights, keeps male legs warm during winters or cool during summers (!).” Oh, I hate it when I forget my pantyhose on long flights and end up, you know, not surviving. Oh, and those cool summers when I go without pantyhose? They’re almost the death of me!

For All Kinds of Positive
This argument is kind of a kitchen-sink catchall. “Men will be healthier,” the site states again, and then claims, “women will be happier,” without explaining how, and “the hosiery industry will explore a new market.” Well, okay, I’ll give them the latter argument.

Look, if guys want to wear pantyhose, then fine, they should wear them! But I just can’t get on the bandwagon of encouraging hosiery manufacturers to direct their energy to creating products designed specifically for men. I mean, not before they figure out a way to make women’s legs look two feet longer first. It’s only fair. [via News.com.au]

The “Men will be healthier, women will be happier” reasoning recalls when they used to advertise cigarettes as being able to clear the lungs, improve the skin, and improve your disposition.

You have to admit though, mantyhose would be a lovely compliment to the Utili-Kilt, which is undoubtedly the manliest of man skirts.

I don’t know.....This just comes across to me as guys who have a fetish for wearing pantyhose and they are trying to push it as being widely acceptable. I’m a open minded chick and I don’t have any problems with that. But say it like it is, because no one is buying the “men will be healthier” bit.  lol

Frankly, I hate pantyhose and can’t imagine why anyone would choose to wear them when they don’t have to.  However, I am a live and let live person and really don’t care what someone else chooses to wear.
I do find the “keep warm and cool” statement ridiculous.  Any I have ever worn left me freezing in the winter and boiling in the summer.  Also they are uncomfortable worn under long pants.

I’m with Michelle - as a gal, I would never *choose* pantyhose!  It’s tights only for me in the wintertime and the rest of the year, it’s bare legs.  Yikes!  -the DCGF

Jessica,

I don’t know if the webpage itself really sounds like that.
Suspicious. But it might be the feeling after reading this article.

Indeed, I can’t promote ph4men as a fetish item. So I focus on fashion, which is pretty much of a fun actually. Health issue is a natural part, but not very spectacular.

Hm. Can I ask you to check the website? And tell me your opinion after? It’s important for me.

I can slightly relate as I wear long johns(thermos) for the winter and they are just as tight as leggings are so its the same difference except that I wear things over them. Though it would be fun to wear with a pair of shorts and some killer rock boots!!

Why are the first 2 ladies upset? If a man chooses to wear hose, it shouldn’t ‘upset’ anyone.  I bet you wouldn’t think it was OK to hear about the days when men (and other women, too) were upset by the emerging trend of women having the audacity to wear… PANTS! Yes, pants used to be thought of as only the domain of menswear.  I think those who are the beneficiaries of a more open-minded era ought to extend that same open-mindedness to others.

I am a man who has been wearing pantyhose for quite a few years.  I started wearing them primarily for improved leg circulation.  Harisnya is probably not a native English-speaker, and thus may not explain as well--but, the support variety of hose DO provide health benefits.  My legs used to be very achy, and I was starting to get varicose veins, in my late 30s.  Since I’ve been wearing hose on a regular basis, the veins have not gotten worse, and my legs feel great.  In the meantime, I’ve discovered quite a few other benefits of wearing hose.

Regarding the heat/cold issue: When I go running/cycling early in the morning, it’s cold out and I wear hose with shorts.  They keep the chill off my legs when I first get started. Later, when I’m done I’m sweating, yet the sheer nylon does not cause me to overheat the way thicker tights or sweatpants would.  So, they keep my legs warm in colder weather.  As for cooling in the hot weather, I think Harisnya is saying that if you wear them with shorts, the air circulating around your legs evaporates the perspiration, and gives a cooling effect.  In my experience, this doesn’t work so well when it gets much above the mid-80s and I don’t wear hose when it gets that hot.

So, Jessica, I AM saying it like it is.  I usually wear “mens” pantyhose (i.e., ActivSkin, etc.) but also wear womens hose as well.  I wear them for the reasons I’ve shared.  I’m not gay, and am happily married with 4 kids.  Any questions?… stop by my page at Gather.com (http://jakebwotha.gather.com)

Ain’t nothing wrong with men wearing pantyhose.  So what if they wear it?  Are you against gays too because they don’t like women or lesbians because they don’t like women either?  What’s up?  This doesn’t even compare to anything remotely disgusting.

I sure do wish that more women would wear pantyhose though.  You don’t understand how many of us guys look at your legs when you do.  I can guarantee you you would get WAY more attention while wearing a shinny nude pair of pantyhose other than some bland black or white rough pantyhose.

For the women who hate pantyhose, I would love for you ALL to wear one REAL pair of pantyhose and after you’ve evaluated them, come back and say you still don’t like wearing pantyhose.

I’m sure you’ve been wearing Legs or Hanes or whatever you find at Macys.

Check these out.  These are all European brands that are rather cheap although not expensive either.

Pretty Polly Italia 10, Pretty Polly Summer Soleil, Aristic Ultra Shine 10.

Try any of those three, which can be had from http://www.mytights.com or http://www.shapings.com and come back and honestly tell me that you don’t like to wear pantyhose.  Those are HIGH quality pantyhose that don’t break the budget.  Give it a try, it won’t hurt to try hose ONCE more, will it?

Wow, some pretty strong opinions on this one. I wonder, if you substituted “gay person” for “man in pantyhose”, if people would be as quick to slam.

I like pantyhose for me. For a guy, if he shaved his legs, I guess it could be hot. It really depends on the legs in the end, but I won’t judge anyone for it.

Good comment, Allison. You’re right, it’s politically incorrect to say anything negative against gay persons (not judging here, just making an observation on the way things are).  That is a protected group.  At this point anyways, us guy who wear pantyhose are on our own.  That’s OK though… we don’t RUN easily <g>.

BTW, I do shave my legs.  Matted hair under hose is not an attractive sight, and they don’t slide down so much that way either.

The only real issues I see with this is that I am uised to being disgusted with my own little hairs sticking out of my hoes, and the same would apply for ‘him’. The not real issue is, well, if they’re too lazy to pee in the toilet how are they going to feel about getting theior hoes out of the way? The fabric is what makes it difficult, not the make of men’s v.s. women’s.

To the one who said that women will love wearing pantyhose if they just try them, ugh, hello… you try. The get holes in them constantly; I go through about 30 pairs every winter because I have manicured nails and travel on busses frequently. The orange TIGHTS, tights, not hoes, look great, and sturdy, same colour as the toolbox, and it’s sooo goog for the model. They would really have to stand up to the man’s work, as it is not delicate like the tights material.

Great for men too, but not for health, come on…

To the guy who said pantyhose aren’t okay and we need to try them more, you try them.  They are not comfortable.  And I looked at the links you posted and 30 or 40 dollars a pair is not affordable, particularly since even the expensive ones run and get holes in one or two wears, same as Leggs and the others you showed such disdain for.

XMalice: ‘Fan of Pantyhose’ referred you to MyTights and Shapings.  He should’ve been more specific and directed you to ActivSkin’s website (http://www.comfilon.com). You can find good quality pantyhose for around $10 or $12, and they will last quite a long time. The only catch is, they’re men’s pantyhose (as in made FOR men). So, you’d have to be OK with ‘cross-dressing’ if you want to wear them. (haha)

I wear the A569 and A577 styles.  They’re good if you’re looking for a support style.

Really? There are guys out there who WANT to wear hose? Well, whatever. My mom made me wear hose through high school on certain occassions. I HATED them. Loathed. Detested. Hose aren’t tights, tights help support and circulation, hose are made to a nuciance. I refuse to wear hose now. Tights, those are fine when it’s cold or I’m in ballet class.

Hey, Newman.  Is that your name?  Because that’s my last name.  Wondered if that is your name, or you saw my name in my profile or something, and were addressing it to me.

Anyways… believe it.  There ARE guys who actually like to wear hose, for the comfort and leg support they provide.  I wear the support style and they help my legs alot. I just finished the 2nd day of a conference, with all those exhibit booths, etc.  My legs were tired and such, but not nearly as much as if I hadn’t had my Sheer Energy on (didn’t wear my ActivSkin today--none were clean).

So, pantyhose do provide support and help circulation, if you buy the support style.

PS, if you’re a long-lost relative or something, drop me an e-mail at

I am a man that wears pantyhose. I have a blood clot and chronic venous insufficiency in my left leg, and wearing support pantyhose makes my legs feel better. I also have neuropathy in my lower legs and feet, and the support hose seem to help reduce the numbness in my legs.

I wear the skin tone hose to try to “blend” in and not draw too much attention to myself. I really do wish everyone could be a little more tolerant about the subject. I feel like I am constantly being judged when people see me or any man wearing pantyhose in public.

Mark,

I’m with you, man.  Sounds like we have the same issue with leg circulation--minus the neuropathy.  Although I don’t have much of a problem with wearing the skintone hose and drawing too much attention.  Most times when I wear them with shorts, either no one notices at all, or if they do they hardly pay it any heed, nor make any negative comments or looks.  Maybe the brand you’re wearing isn’t all that sheer and that might make it more noticeable.

BTW, this discussion has gotten quite a few hits. I’ve got a Legwear Discussion Group over at Gather.com (http://legwear.gather.com/) that I’d like to invite any interested parties to come check out. I’m looking to generate discussion of men’s legwear among the general populace--as opposed to some discussion groups on the web that are comprised 95% or more of men who already wear legwear. Instead, I’m looking to get the insights/opinions of people who are not already a captive audience (i.e., not ‘singing to the choir’). My Gather page can be found at: http://jakebwotha.gather.com/
