Farrah Fawcett Leaves The Hospital; What Is Anal Cancer, Anyway?

Farrah Fawcett left a Los Angeles hospital today after being there over a week. She suffered from stomach bleeding resulting from the anal cancer treatment she received in Germany. [People] XOX to FF. We hope you’re feeling better! But we gotta admit, we hd a Big Q: What exactly is “anal cancer?”

This cancer attacks the anus—the opening at the end of the digestive tract—and mostly effects people over 60. (We have awesome things to look forward to.) You know you’re in trouble when you have bright red rectal bleeding, uncontrollable itching, and fatigue. Women may get lower back pain if the tumor pressures the vagina. While no one knows the cause of the disease, HPV exposure and smoking highly increase your chances of getting it. So take it easy on the unprotected anal sex and the smoking you do after. If she is bleeding from the stomach, it might be a cancerous gastrointestinal stromal tumors, which is thought to come from the nerve cells that control intestinal motility. There are other types though.. I’m not a real doctor [yet] and that’s the diagnosis I made with wikipedia.

On an unrelated, but less melancholy note: I bought my boyfriend a t-shirt from my med school. He wore it on vacation in Memphis. When asked if he went to med school, he said that he was an attending @ St. Jude’s. When questioned as to what field, he answered butt cancer (unfortunately he was on the beer line and I missed the exchange).

Also, some anal cancers may be linked to HPV, so there’s another reason to go get vaccinated.

My old neighbor has anal cancer, she was going to chemo and could barely get out of the house.  The worst thing was she couldn’t have sex, I think because of the chemo, but I’m not 100% on that.  But after we got in an argument with them and quit talking to them, I also found out that she had cervical cancer too.  I kinda felt bad for her, but they’re not the cleanest people anyway, rats and roaches is all I’m gonna say about that.

I used to do CME contract work for an Oncologist, who mentioned that smoking is being connected to more and more cancers, unrelated to primary Lung sites—pancreatic, colo-rectal among a few others I can’t remember. I understand treatment and pathology of this disease is very painful. I wish Farrah well.

This is totally my nightmare.  Anal cancer basically announces to everyone that you’ve had anal sex.

averardoll, are you a first year?  teeheehee, i think there are much more common reasons to have bleeding from the stomach after chemotherapy… as in stress ulcers.

@ sprinkibrio.. yea.. I’m a first year. I know there are more logical answers, but I’m procrastinating from my neuro studying by surfing wikipedia for anal cancer raspberry

@Averardoll: My brother is going to be a doctor, he’s just about done with undergrad at Johns Hopkins. The dumb-bastard got a 40 on his MCATS. No matter what his field is I WILL introduce him as my brother the proctologist.

@lmseagle…i don’t think you can get cancer from rats and cockroaches unless they’re like crawling up your naughty places…and even then i don’t think it’s possible. perhaps our future doctors can clear that up.

No, vermin don’t give ya cancer, rsonnack, but I think the OP was referring to unhealthy living habits (dirty house) that may be more indicative of activities that are potentially cancer causing.

@ Cheesy bobeesy.. only a 40.. psswwahh.. tell him to pack his bags for the Caribbean. All kidding aside.. has he gotten into a school, has he not applied yet or has he decided to do something silly like try his hand @ the LSAT?
