Eyelash Growth Product Latisse Faces Backlash
For some, Latisse has proven to be a miracle beauty product as the formula promises to grow full, long, thick eyelashes. Though Latisse was FDA approved, take heed: Cityfile is reporting that the FDA has now released an advisory letter regarding Latisse, the details of which are downright scary ...
“Yes, it turns out that there are some bizarre things that can happen when you apply the patented—and totally affordable!—ophthalmic solution. According to the FDA, they include eyelash growth in areas besides the lash area (hairy cheeks, perhaps?) and inflammation of the cornea, and there’s even the potential for light-colored eyes to turn brown. That’s not all: In one trial, some users experienced eye redness, itchy eyes, and hyper-pigmentation of the skin in areas where the product was applied.”
Well, that’s an eye-opener (couldn’t resist), but perhaps not too surprising, considering the horrors associated with eyelash dying (there is record of one fatality). The truly desperate could settle for eyelash transplants (eek!). Kind of makes you want to stick with your trusty Maybelline, huh? [Cityfile]

With plenty of fake eyelashes and lash extending mascaras on the market why risk your health for this stuff anyways? Seems like an unnecessary risk for some eyelashes.

The first time I saw a commercial for this I couldn’t believe it wasn’t a sick joke. How desperate for lashes would you have to be to permanently dye your eyes?

@bethlynoo - I agree, I personally wouldn’t use it, I’m happy with my eyelashes as is. But I had a friend in high school who had super short eyelashes to the point where someone once asked her if she cut them off. Using mascara on lashes that short isn’t going to do much, so I could see where there would be a market for something that would permanently fill in and lengthen lashes.

My best friend mentioned wanting this stuff. I think it’s ridiculous. Just because it doesn’t look like you have feathers growing out of your eyelids doesn’t mean you have “too few lashes.” Newsflash: even the chicks in mascara ads are wearing falsies! It’s just silly.

I could see this being beneficial for people who suffer from trichotillomania, or maybe burn victims, but otherwise it’s just pointless. I couldn’t believe it wasn’t some sort of spoof when I first saw the commercials.

@Chebs: this stuff actually isn’t permanent. Once you stop using it, you’ll have new lashes grow back out like what normally happens, but the new ones will be short again.

@sameji - Well, that makes sense. I also looked up on their website how often you’re supposed to apply it - every night. So, I guess it’s a trade-off. You could glue on fake eyelashes every morning or put this stuff on every night.

This is a glaucoma drug with a side-effect of longer lashes now approved by the FDA for this new use. It will dye your eyes brown!!! I mean, come on, why would you do that?
