Estrogen May Make Women Promiscuous

A new report released this week suggests that high levels of estrogen, known as estradiol, may make some of us act a bit slutty. Apparently, the hormone not only makes us feel pretty, it makes us horny, as well—and not just for the one we’re with. “Women with higher estradiol reported a greater likelihood of flirting, kissing and having a serious affair with someone other than their primary partner and were marginally more likely to date another man,” reported researcher Dr. Kristina Durante of The University of Texas at Austin. Researchers discovered that women with high-estradiol were considered significantly hotter by themselves, as well as others. High-estradiol is also the hormone that makes women especially fertile, so researchers report: “Results provide support for the relationship between physical beauty and fertility and suggest that women high in reproductive health engage in opportunistic serial monogamy—being open to affairs and moving on to a new relationship if a higher-quality mate becomes available.” It’s interesting, though, that the study only tested 52 women, all between the ages of 17 and 30, all undergrads, and all in Texas. That hardly seems like a fair representation of fertile woman, if you ask me. I mean, everyone knows Texan undergrads are loose. Oh, I kid, people. I kid. [Yahoo]

Especially in undergrads correlation does not equal causation and here’s why: It is well known that most college campuses have high rates of binge drinking. Beer is a common choice for college students because it is often cheaper than mixed drinks. Beer contains hops, which contain a chemical that increases estradiol levels in woman. These higher estradiol levels can also cause women’s breasts to get larger. So it could be the women that have higher estradiol levels just drink more and lose their inhibitions and feel more sexy because they have bigger boobs. Just some food for thought.

i’m actually the sexual health educator for UT austin and…wow. i do love the idea that booze increases estradiol though. that’s a fascinating theory (and UT is the perfect laboratory in which to test it).
the rub is that all that increased estradiol makes men more feminine (man-boobs, anyone?) and less able to maintain erection. so it’s a vicious cycle that, all too often, doesn’t result in sex.

So, wait—you’re saying it’s not my fault?

Although this “study” seems slanted (at least to me), it’s sparked some interest with me and some friends.
At what point in a woman’s life does this happen?  Meaning the higher amounts of estradiol.  If it’s a naturally occuring thing, then is there a link between this and possible promiscuous behavior and premenopausal women?
I know several ladies my age (35) who are “looking” outside their marriage for fulfillment; hubby is just not enough.  Is this something us pre-middle-aged folk need to start having tested too?
At any rate, I’d be curious as to the results b/c I’ve been told I’m at my sexual prime.  I feel sexier, I love turning heads, and I’ve had those not so healthy thoughts of afternoon romps with doesn’t include my significant other.  Not trying to diagnose myself, but if we’re told to do what feels good, and if the cause of that is an imbalance, then the word needs to get out that maybe it’s a test every lady needs at a certain age… just like a mammogram, ya know?
