Elizabeth Edwards Discusses Her Husbands Affair

In her new memoir, Resilience, out on May 12, Elizabeth Edwards describes how she found out that husband John Edwards had an affair with Rielle Hunter and why she decided to forgive him. Elizabeth, who is terminally ill with cancer, refers to Hunter as a pathetic “parasite groupie who invaded the Edwardses life,” according to the New York Daily News. Hunter initially hit on Edwards by telling him, “You are so hot,” outside of a hotel. When Edwards finally confessed to his indiscretion—after being busted by the National Enquirer—he continued lying, telling Elizabeth that he had only cheated once, when, in fact, he had had a long affair with Hunter. So, why did Elizabeth forgive him? She writes:

“I lie in bed, circles under my eyes, my sparse hair sticking in too many directions, and he looks at me as if I am the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. It matters.”

Ugh. This is so ridiculous. He cheated on you when you had terminal cancer, and because he looks at you like you’re the most beautiful woman in the world you take him back?

I think there comes a point when you are so weak and it feels like the bottom has dropped out of your world that you just want something familiar.

I would also like to add that as someone from NC I contributed to his campaign.

But he is a douchebag for cheating on his wife.

Unfortunately, our family’s lost 4 beloved aunts to breast cancer—and believe me, there is a lot of reckoning and reconnecting and forgiveness. Elizabeth’s choice to live may have been taken away from her. So, why take away her choice to leave the way she needs to, judging her for her very private hell—lived out in public?

There are far bigger forces at work than snippet book quotes like “he makes me feel beautiful.” John has the rest of his life to think about his shabby actions. She only has now. In the end, there is only love. That is the text, the subtext of any *personal* story of the heart.

I agree with SociallyAlexander and retrochic. What he did was all kinds of wrong, but I think that maybe she decided to “pick her battles” and live out the rest of her life with her family intact without adding more stress by filing for divorce, etc. John, Karma is truly a bitch.
