Twilight’s Edward Cullen Ruins Guys’ Chances With Girls

Edward Cullen Ruins Dating For Average Guys

According to one writer, Edward Cullen, the moody heartthrob of “Twilight” (in case you’ve been living under a rock for the last year or so), has ruined, just ruined the chances of young men when it comes to wooing their female counterparts. Ergo, Lydia Netzer lists “Ten Ways ‘Twilight’ Has Ruined a Generation of High School Girlfriends.” Apparently, Cullen’s sullen, pouty ways, heroic casualness, and come-here-go-away dating vibe has won the hearts of teen girls but destroyed the likelihood of teen boys scoring with them.

“It used to be hard to get a date in high school,” Netzer writes. “Now, thanks to Twilight, it’s got to be damn near impossible.” With Mr. Vampire acting so awesome, Regular Dudes are sure to fail the Cullen-inspired expectations of their prospective girlfriends.

How so?

“He can save you from speeding SUVs and vampires and thugs without sweating. If a real boy saved you from a thug he’d probably rehash the whole event in front of his friends forty times, but Edward just wanders off.”

“When he’s being cryptic, and you push him to explain himself, it just makes him like you *even more.* Real boys tend to have to get off the phone when this happens.”

“When he’s moody, it’s because he wants to eat people, not because he’s about to break up with you.”

That’s really lame.

Less dating, less sex, less pregnancies.

I am 34 years old and *I* wish I could find an Edward Cullen.  Closer to my age of course.  And able to ravage me without killing me….Poor highschool boys.

Yes, every girl wants a moody, emotionally distant stalker who breaks into her bedroom and refuses to make out with her. Hot! Where do I sign up?

Well, yes, same as Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing ruined love lives of all boys in the Eighties…

I’m really sorry to all the guys out there who like girls who like Edward Cullen - especially the ones who are out of high school and still have to deal with it. Seriously?

But on the other hand, if she’s really into Edward Cullen, she’s totally not worth it. Go find someone who makes sense/isn’t going to throw you into a rollercoaster relationship where she expects you to know what she wants without her ever saying anything.

Every high school class has its heartthrob. Anyone remember Interview with a Vampire? That had plenty of teen and pre-teen ladies “spoiled”. Seriously, if a fantasy character is your basis for a good boyfriend, you’re going to have a long and painful road ahead…

This is the same for all women.  You grow up watching these movies about this type of guy and think that’s how ‘real’ guys are.  LOL I remember thinking I wanted to date a guy just like the one in “The Sandlot” (the older kid with the dark hair).  He was cute, athletic, a little misunderstood with a good heart, blah, blah, BLAH!  It does take awhile to make yourself realize this is not reality!
“Edward” does not own this designation as the ruiner (yeah I made it up) of high-school relationships.

We need our teenage girls to get hold of some real literature…then the guys will REALLY be outta luck.

So essentially girls want chivalry…that’s what the author is saying.

But when they have it—aka “the nice guy”—they dump his ass for the jerk.

@jojo32 That would be Benny Rodriquez you speak of. And I LOVED him. Along with one of those boys from the Three Ninjas movies.

I always went after the nice guy, they had a couple jerky moments like all dudes do, but I never once went after the bad boy. My momma taught me better than that. raspberry

When I was in high school, it was Justin Timberlake who all the girls were obsessing over. The fad passed, they moved on, and they started dating their male peers. As a guy, I have much less disdain for Justin Timberlake and Edward Cullen and their “impact” on dating than I do for Disney. Disney has been instilling unrealistic expectations of men into the minds of young girls for decades.

“Let me make you a metaphor map: Loss of virginity = death. Edward = impotent.”

So has anyone else wondered if the current tween+ love affair with Cullen has to do with the massive dose of abstinence education most of these girls had to swallow?

@ Green_Viking: I just graduated high school and I agree with you. I was disappointed in the books because i wanted some hot sex in there.  But i feel comfortable with my little sisters reading the books… I don’t want them reading about hot sex… awkward. And about the sex Ed thing, I was right on that line of not just abstinence but not just condoms education.  But now…. The kids going through it don’t have to go through have of the crap that i did. It may have been disgusting to hear from my grandma like teacher, but so necessary.

@Green Viking: LOL!  Abstinence education causes girls to daydream about impotent men, that’s fantastically funny!

@marv3mania:  That is such a good point about Disney.  What makes it even sadder is that most of those movies were based on stories that had much more interesting characters than the versions that made it onto the screen, proactive women and the men who fell for them instead of princesses waiting to be rescued (except Sleeping Beauty, kinda hard to be proactive in your sleep, lol).  Still adore those movies but they definitely created some crazy expectations for both men and women, the kind no one can live up to.

@CraftLass et all:  Just to be clear, since I realize that I put it in quotes but did not remember to put her name afterward, Lydia Netzer, writer of the linked article, came up with that line.
