Don’t Hate Them Cause They’re Beautiful!

Hot Cop

“She’s too sexy for her job, too sexy for her job, so sexy…” Yes, I changed the lyrics, but the message still fits. Recently-fired UK prison officer Amitjo Kajila wants payback. The 22-year-old is demanding reparations from Justice Secretary Jack Straw after he allegedly fired her for…being too pretty. Officers said the size 4 Kajila received frequent inmate attention due to her make-up and revealing clothes, posing a security risk to herself and the prison. (Really they’re just jealous!) Kajila claims the other officers bullied her for her appearance and called her a “stupid little girl.” (Hey, It’s not her fault she’s hawt!) I guess besides being locked up, ugly prison guards are another drawback to the clink. [Daily Mail]

Amitjo isn’t the only woman suffering from Pretty People Prejudice (hell, there’s a whole documentary about them!). After the jump, other people who claim their flawless complexion got them the boot.

  • She may be a homewrecker, but she is pretty. Sienna Miller will no longer play Maid Marion in the upcoming movie “Nottingham.” Why—she is too pretty for the love scenes between her character and Russell Crowe’s. Turns out Russell is looking more rotund lately and the director booted Miller for a plumper female lover. Somehow I just don’t feel bad for her. [NY Post]
  • A Florida biology teacher was fired last year for showing some of her human anatomy. Tiffany Shepherd claims she was fired from her teaching job after some sexy photos of her in a bikini were posted on the website of the fishing boat services company where she moonlighted. Shepherd only took the second job after getting divorced and could not raise her three kids alone on a teacher’s salary. [Bitten and Bound]
  • Jessica Biel thinks if she weren’t as pretty she would get more movie roles. What!? The 27-year-old actress thinks her looks have deter movie directors from giving her any dramatic roles, saying, “The way I look really is a problem.” Umm, I’ll take that problem any day. [SMH]

Has anyone you know been fired over their looks?

As far as the poor ex-prison guard is concerned, I agree, basically, with the others at the prison. From the story, it seems like she was acting in a way which was completely unsafe. Any woman in a prison should be especially on guard (even more so than men, who also need to be wary), and to essentially flirt with prisoners was insane.

She obviously can look as nice as she wants off work, but at work, in a prison, I think she was not being too smart to act and dress as she did.

The only woman in the stories above that I feel badly about is the teacher who was fired for also being a model. A clothed model at that. I think that’s ridiculous.

I have to agree with jsw here. I only feel bad for the teacher. Given the lead story, I’m sorry that poor girl was fired, but she is lacking some sense. It’s one thing to look nice, but she’s working in a prison. As a med student, I may have to give physicals at a prison. Talking to a doctor there, he told me that they tell students to not even wear make up or fuss with one’s hair.
It reminds me of that arrested development episode…

One of my friends was a prison guard.  That’s just not a job that you wear heels to.  You don’t have “revealing” clothes on.  You make yourself as uninteresting to the inmates as possible.

When you take a job, you have to abide by company policy.  If the dress code forbids heavy make-up, certain types of jewelry, revealing clothes and you violate the policy, you can’t run around whining about the consequences of your actions.

Couldn’t care less about the acresses, and that sucks for the teacher.

Make-up? Revealing clothes? This doesn’t sound like a prison guard unless it’s in the movies. She should have more sense than that. It would have been nice if the other guards had talked to her about the proper appearance instead of bullying her. If they did speak to her and she refused to take their advise, she deserves her fate.

Wonder why she chose to be a prison guard in the first place. There are better occupations if a girl wants to look glamourous.

@frisked: Yes, I do think she’s fairly pretty, and she has an excellent body. However, I don’t think her appearance is what’s stopping her from getting roles.

@becktasm: I’m no fan either, but why do you hate her so much? Just curious.

I’m not especially pretty but I have a bosom like you wouldn’t believe.  The the cantileverage required for me to stand upright would be tremendous if my chest hadn’t grown very slowly for the better part of a decade so that I developed a very strong back.  Since I was in school it has preceded me.  I had a nickname which was unpronounceable because it was simply a hand motion denoting breasts, and a joke “Oh alphabete’s chest arrives at school fifteen minutes before she does!”  No, while standing upright I cannot see my (size 11) feet and I am unable to swim under water (too buoyant).  It’s all natural.

Many times, thanks to them, I have gotten into places and gotten to do things.  I can’t deny that my boobs have been a gateway to a world of excitement!  On the other hand, frequently people who are speaking to me are peering into my cleavage as if they expect something to jump out of it.  Perhaps my tiny, alien puppeteer?  (Pay no attention to the Little Green Man between the boobies!)  It can be annoying, along with the questions “Are those REAL?” “Wow, do you have huge nipples?” and an oldie but goodie “I don’t want to be offensive here, but can I just feel one, just to SEE what one of those feels like?.”  In the days before giant t-shirts became THE wardrobe staple one might have thought my name was “Damn, Girl.”

It’s a blessing and a curse.  They’re breasts, I didn’t do anything to make them this way (If you don’t count praying for breasts and doing “I must increase my bust!” exercises faithfully until they started to grow.).  Sometimes they’re a pain in the butt, they get me all manner of unwarranted attention, but then again the kind of people who stare at my cleavage and call me “Damn, Girl” aren’t the kind of people whose interaction means much in my life.  Sure, I’m often called “the one with the boobs” but I’m also frequently the smart/geeky one, the one who will be there at 3am to babysit your kids because of an emergency, and the kind of weird one.  Seems silly to complain about something that is such a boon (Beauty opens many many doors.) just because it draws attention to you and you can’t handle it.  Imagine, pretty whiners, what it must be like for everyone to stare at you and NOT even to think of you as a sexual being because you’re a burn victim.

In high school my Criminal Justice took a trip to the prison. We had to wear jeans (absolutely no skirts or shorts allowed), shirts (nothing low cut), no make up or anything. And we didn’t even come into contact with the prisoners! They still jeered at us, and we were a bunch of kids. Maybe this woman wanted the attention, or maybe she’s a total moron.

That was a very powerful statement, and it sums things up very nicely. Yes, there are downsides to being beautiful and/or desirable, but they very rarely outweigh the positives, and, if one considers one’s beauty to be a burden, it’s always easier to hide beauty than to create it.

I agree, being pretty and wearing makeup/revealing clothing are two totally different things.  It sounds like she was being completely inappropriate, given the job.

I don’t know - I work at a hospital, and have taken to making myself look pretty frumpy when I go to work (no makeup, very modest clothes, etc) in an effort to stop having patients make comments to me.  It still happens, and I do think it interferes with me being taken as seriously as I wish I were, but at least I’m doing what I can to avoid it.  Do I wish I could look prettier when I go to work?  Of course.  But do I realize that this simply comes with the territory, and there are plenty of other jobs out there if being pretty is such a priority?  Of course.

I thought prison guards wore uniforms and sensible shoes. Damn Oz!
@Frisked—no i don’t think she’s pretty but i don’t think her preceived beauty is stopping her from getting roles. There are 100 working beautiful women who can’t act worth a damn.
