Does Your Hair Never Hold A Curl?

Mischa Barton

Well, have I got a trick for you. If you’re anything like me or, um, Mischa Barton—check her out last night, on the left she’s arriving and, right, she’s headed home from the same party—and wage a war on your stick straight hair when trying to get it to wave or curl, this is a post for you. (Those of you with hair that forms pretty, perfect waves ... I’m jealous. Grass is always greener, though, I suppose.) So, it’s actually not that hard a hair trick—it just involves making a different hair tool choice….

So, as usual, don’t try to curl just washed hair (day-old dirtier hair works best because the built up oils help make your hair more mold-able), and apply a setting lotion before your start in with the curling iron. Now, the important part: Choose a curling iron that is smaller barreled than what you want your curl to be. So, if you want two inch curls, go with a one inch (or 3/4 inch ) barreled iron. Sure, your curls will look crazy tight to begin with, but as your hair fights to get back to it’s straight self, the curl will unravel nicely. (So curl your hair with enough time for it to “fall” before leaving the house…) Got any other suggestions to share? Me and my straight head of hair are all ears!

Yahoo! There’s hope for my whip-straight strands yet!
Potential problem, though: I wash my hair every day because it’s so straight and fine that it looks super greasy if I don’t. So if I skip a day of washing, will the curl mask the greasy grossness?

The only thing I have found that works is letting my hair dry over night in soft rag curlers that I can sleep on.  Now that my hair is longer it takes forever to dry so no more curl option for me.

@typewriter try getting some dry shampoo for the non wash day.  It will allow you to try this try and take away some of the “greasy” shine we sometimes get smile

@typewriter if you’re blonde, I find that baby powder works wonders - just dump a little into your hands, pat them together, then run your fingers through your hair. Much cheaper than dry shampoo.

As for keeping a curl, I swear by my process: Hairspray first all over your hair, let it dry then brush out. Curl. Before mussing up the “too perfect” curls, hit them with some Sprunch Spray and let that dry. Then run your fingers through it and you’ll have great curls all day/night.

@Bumbler, me too! that is the only way my curls will stay. If I put them on over night, and blow dry them a little in the morning, add a little hairspray, they’ll last all day and even till the next. I HATE curling my hair, i seriously have to do it the day before, plan a lot, look ridiculous, just for curls. I do get a whole lot of compliments, but Its just not worth it, its too much.

My hair is excruciatingly curly and it takes a lot of effort (an hour or so) to get it moderately straight. The grass is much greener on the other side.

I know it is super bad for you hair if you do it too much, but I curl my hair with a flat iron and it stays and stays, for a few days even, and my hair NEVER holds curl. I think it must be the higher heat?

Mine is cut in a Louise Brooks bob.  You MUST have stick-straight hair to make that work.

I can cook my hair in a curling iron at the hottest setting with tons of product, let go, and it falls back just as straight as before I tortured it.  Sigh.  No curls for me.

@typewriter the curl will probably mask whatever greasiness happens to your hair. i have naturally thick hair that comes in tons of ringlets and i can go several days without washing it before it looks greasy and yucky..

I’ve been using the Caruso Molecular Steam Hairsetter for years.  It’s the only thing that gives my hair body.  And though the curl does start coming out, it will last a lot longer than using a curling iron or regular hot rollers

Since I was little I wanted to have princess hair - you know Victorian ringlets? And tried everything in my path from banana rollers to perms to prayers and wanted to understand why my ancestors in the past had so much more success. Eventually I realized its because they had maids and others that tied their hair in rag rollers (among other things)and gave up the quest and decided to love my hair the way it was. HOWEVER - I too have had success with the Caruso, but it requires some experimentation, knowing how to use it and coordination. Also - as always the shorter your hair the more success you will have. When unable to sleep in rag rollers, and no access to caruso - following the advice above PLUS do the following. Do not “unroll” the curl from the iron - sort of slip it off still in an “O” and bobbypin it to your head. You can hairspray it then, but never spray the curl and then let it hang - the extra weight helps pull out the curl. Let the curls “cool” while pinned to your head. Then get dressed, do the rest, and when almost ready to go remove the pins, and do the final styling. Way too much work most of the time easier to move to Brazil where everyone kills to have board straight blonde hair wink
