Do You Prefer Heels Or Flats?

flats vs heels

Despite all the outlandishly high heels designers like Rodarte, Nina Ricci, and John Galliano put on the runway for fall, The Times has declared heels dead. As proof of this trend, the paper cites a survey from department store Selfridges that reports a 20 percent increase in sales of flat shoes and the story of a company that banned high heels for health reasons. Even though a few other New York designers favored flats for fall, we’re not so sure we agree heels are dead per se, especially because I’d like to get out of these flat sandals I’ve been wearing for months.

Which do you prefer: heels or flats?

I like mid-height heels.  Last year’s fad for retro mary janes with 2”-or-so heels was just my thing.

I mostly wear flats - especially when running around town. But there’s nothing sexier than going out at night in a pair of high high heels!

I have a hellva time wearing heels. It’s way too painful. So I opt for cute flats or kitten heels.

flats. pretty much just b/c I’m ultra clumsy and not exactly the most graceful being on the planet. in my case, heels are really just a health hazard. (then again, i’ve also managed to sprang my ankle really badly wearing flip-flops… so maybe I should just start going barefoot???)

Flats, for sure. I’m 5’9’‘, I feel a little like a giraffe in heels.

i am definitely a fan of 2-3 inch heels. i’m short so i want a little height with out being wobbly and in pain. mostly i just cant deal with stilettos, bring back the chunky heels! (just kidding, not super chunky) smile

I wish I could wear heels! I have to wear flats all the time because if I don’t I’m just asking to be injured. I’m a big and very clumsy girl so flats are for me.

Flats, definitely flats. Occasionally wearing heels is nice and does seem to dress up the appearance also being 5’5 it’s fun to be a bit taller and eye level with my boyfriend.

But I was raised by my aunt and she seriously wore heels non-stop for 50+ years. At work, going shopping, going to the market, etc. She only took them off at home and to exercise. And they completely misshaped her feet. Her toes are bent inward, like pointed and she has gotten a lot of callouses and other foot related discomfort stuff.

So when I think about how much pain she was in I say screw sexy and wear flats.

I LOVE my heels, but flats are the only way to go to stay in alignment.

Flats.  I have canvas flats and a low pair of heels under my desk at work, and I wear my Chacos for everything else.

The higher the better. I’m a total shoe addict and have everything from sneakers to hooker heels. If it was practical for me to wear my heels everyday I would since flats make me look frumpy because I’m curvy and need the height to counter act my giant bust and butt. Peep toes are my fav because I have pretty feet and cute toes and a bomb ass pedicure all the time.

I *love* heals but being almost 6’2” and wearing a 12/13 wide show size I rarely ever do. Besides just making me too tall for things I rarely find cute shoes in my size.

Flats or very low heels. I love the way I LOOK in higher heels, but after about 15 minutes I hate the way I FEEL (or at least my feet and ankles do!).

I love both, I can’t chose. But I might prefer heels because astonishingly, they make my flat feet feel better.

I’m so into heels right now. 3-4” ideally. I feel so much sexier, and my posture is better, and I feel like I command so much more respect (i.e., at 5’9”+3” heels, I’m taller than my boss, and he actually does leave me alone more when I tower over him).

Ahh! I don’t know! I love heels, I love how they look and feel and my boyfriend sure likes them. But I’m afraid of looking too high-maintenance, so I don’t wear them a lot. I have all these gorgeous shoes and I never wear them because I don’t want to seem too dressed up or full of myself. I need to get over that.

I own one pair of heels. They are about one-and-a-half inches tall. The only other shoes I own are flats. They make them so cute these days that there is simply no point in torturing yourself.

I’m with Coral - I love both and can’t choose. Having a more casual summer work wardrobe, I have been wearing more flats than heels, and my feet hurt. Even in “good” flats - heels give me better arch support.

@jld117: I so understand about the arch support that heels give. Most people don’t believe me when I say that heels are comfortable and make my feet feel better.
