Do You Consider Your Skin Tone When Getting Dressed?

Julianne Moore

Love Julianne Moore. Don’t love Julianne’s choice of dress color. She looks a bit sickly, no? When it comes to picking out a dress or blouse, I swear people don’t bother to think about their skin tone. It’s funny because with anything makeup-related the first question is: “Will this work with my skin tone?” Um, hello, your top has to make just as much skin color sense as your shade of red lipstick!

Like Ms. Moore, I’m a pale person. Granted, I don’t have skin as pretty as hers, but I take serious pains to make sure I do my pale (and sometimes ghostly white) skin every possible favor. And that means never wearing this type of neutral, blah color—I let the more olive-skinned lady folk rock it, the women who always look great in this nude hue. Me, I buy loads of jewel-toned tops and, if I really want a nude or a neutral, I’ll wear it on my bottom half, so it doesn’t suck all the color out of my face and make me look green. What about you—do you consider skin tone when shopping or putting on your clothes every morning? Do you have a go-to color that always makes your skin look great?

I do consider it because I am also very pale.  I don’t stay away from neutrals completely, but I also try not to match my clothes exactly (as she does here).  It needs to be a few shades off one way or another.  I spray tanned a little before my wedding so I wasn’t too close in color to my ivory dress.  When my hair was blond black was my go-to color.  Now that its brown I haven’t yet found the color that always looks good.  Its only been a few weeks.

Being a pale, auburn-haired maiden like our Julianne Moore here, I go to great lengths to make sure I don’t look like a vampire or worse when I’m roaming these mean streets.  I do believe in the loveliness of pale colors on pale ladies, though.  This shade would be absolutely beautiful on her, if only she had worn it in sunlight.  The photog flash bulbs make nearly everyone a bit “Edward “Cullen”, so wearing a shade that’s a bit risky can sometimes not work out, especially when you’re already feeling a bit iridescent.  I think that is what celebrities like Miz Moore and Nicole Kidman need to think about when they dress for an event, and not a brunch with friends.

I have a dark complexion - think Angela Bassett - so I love me some jewel tones, like ruby red, emerald green, vivid blues, and gold.  I get the best compliments when I wear those colors.

I’m very pale even though my hair is brown, and I tend to wear bright, saturated colours like red, fushia, bright blue.  Interestingly, white looks very good on me and I can’t wear beige/cream or earth tones.

I think it’s just the lighting that’s making her skin tone and hair colour look so washed out. I’ve seen that colour really work for pale skinned girls but the lighting even makes the black in her outfit look rather dull. That outfit does nothing for her figure either though.

I have very fair skin.  I think jewel tones look best on me, and I avoid yellow and orange.  I do consider my skin tone when I shop.

I have yellow undertones in my skin so yellow and gold make me look jaundiced.  Even gold jewelry is out.

I definitely consider it - it’s part of the “does this look good on me?” question! I’m super pale with dark brown hair, and like most other pale ladies here I tend towards saturated jewel tones. I can’t really wear stark white but crams and off-whites look alright on me. I usually wear lipstick and blush or something if I’m wearing offwhite to try and bring a little color to my face!

I’m really pale… but I have a sort of pinkish tone to my skin (makes it really hard to find the right shade makeup…).  I really like deep colors, and neutrals seem to work well for me.  Some brights (like yellow and orange) look terrible on me.  I try to always keep a more bold color somewhere when I’m wearing neutrals, though—shoes or necklace or something.

So the answer is yes! I do consider my skin tone when I’m putting an outfit together.

I have a cocoa complexion. I stick with colours one would wear on a tropical vacation and pastels.  People say I look good in black, but I passed though that phase 10 years ago.

I think nude can look really good on anyone regardless of skintone, you just have to be sure to keep a little color in the face and hair.

You would have to consider it wouldnt you? Even men know how to do that. Dark colors look best on me so i stick pretty close to those.

Nope! I’m caramel-coloured so pretty much every colour works on me HOWEVER, I think that every colour works on every woman. A woman with pale skin can look amazing in all-black just like I can. It’s about the “extras.” If she’s also wearing striking makeup and has long black hair, it may be a bit “much.” Hair and makeup can and should be considered the deciding factor in this equation.

I don’t, really. I’m fairly olive-complected, and get really tan in the summer, so pretty much any color family works on my skin. I think…I really don’t consider it a lot, though.

i actually think that color looks gorgeous on her.  very ethereal and out of this world.  i think the paparazzi flash is much more unflattering to her pale skin than her color choice.
