Who hasn’t had a drink or two before hopping in the sack? I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been guilty. I mean sex—especially with a new person—can be a daunting task. A nice little buzz can help alleviate some stress or spice things up a bit, right? But hold on one second before you polish off that cosmo. Do you really need that drink to get down? A new study conducted in the U.K. about women, sex, and alcohol suggests that maybe the answer is yes. The study concludes that not only do women seem to prefer drunken sex to sober sex, but we also are using alcohol to compensate for confidence, especially about our bodies. After the jump, some more sobering stats that may make you think twice about drinking before getting it on.
- One in 20 women between the ages of 18 and 50 has NEVER had sex sober!
- Half of the 3,000 women questioned prefer sex while under the influence because it makes them feel less inhibited.
- Three-fourths of women say that are able to let loose in bed after a few drinks.
- Four out of 10 women have always been tipsy when sleeping with a new partner.
- 75 percent of married women like to drink before getting in bed with their husband.
- 14 percent of women in relationships say they can’t face sex with their partner sober.
- More than half of the single women said that drinking was part of the dating process so they expected to be a bit drunk when they had sex. [Daily Mail]

I had sex once with a long-term bf after we had a few drinks. I was less inhibited, so that was kinda fun, but he went completely flat after only a few minutes, so that was a bummer. And that was the only time I had sex drunk. Perhaps it would have been better if he hadn’t been drinking too.

The one time I had drunk sex and it was pretty terrible. Being a little tipsy definitely loosens you up, and that’s awesome, but being flat-out drunk usually makes other things… well, flat.

true story, for the most part. although i don’t think the first stat is that shocking? 5% isnt that high, in the grand scheme of things. The 75% of married women thing, however, shocked me.
I’ve had sex both drunk and sober, and enjoyed both. You can certainly be TOO drunk to have sex, and there are definitely instances where it’s not a good idea to have sex with someone when you’re drunk, especially if it’s someone new. I have found that, as someone mentioned earlier, guys who have had a lot to drink often have erectile issues. Which sucks for all parties involved.
Bottom line, I don’t have a preference, but obviously if the ONLY reason you’re sleeping with someone is because you’re drunk…I’d hold off.

I don’t mind a few drinks to loosen me up when I’m with someone new. BUT, if I have too many I’m way too dry down there to enjoy anything… With my guy now, most of the time I’m completely sober, others it’s just a glass or two with dinner.

I don’t have a preference either. Having a few glasses of champagne is nice every now and then, but sex is great either way.

Like Pool, I feel like there’s definitely a “beer effect” when it comes to drinking. Having 1-3 drinks before slipping between the sheets makes everyone a little looser, less worried about things, and frankly, makes me last a little longer.
There’s definitely a point where performance suffers and things are done or said that can be regretted later. Things go limp, women can’t reach the finish line, and everything is just sloppy.
I’d say a woman who can’t enjoy sex sober may have some issues. But I don’t have a problem with a lady who likes to have a drink or two before getting down.

Ok. When I was younger and didn’t know any better I was the queen of drunk hook ups. So now as an old married lady I have found that I HATE drunk sex. I get all numb and don’t feel anything so I never finish. But I will say that if hubby wants to *ahem* “experiment” all I need is a coupla mojitos and I’m good to go.

I like it either way, but once in a while, drunk sex is really fun. My boyfriend and I have been together a long time, and getting tipsy makes us both go a little crazy in a good way.

I think the reason I possibly feel more confident during drunk/tipsy is because I get dressed up and go out and feel sexy about myself beforehand (which is, of course, when I often get drunk). When I take off my sweatpants to start jumping his bones, I don’t feel quite as hot.

I rarely drink at all, so drunk sex really isn’t an issue in my world. That also means I have no tolerance for alcohol, so just a few drinks makes me useless and no fun at all.
My husband is cool with that though. I’m a natural redhead (see related JDV article if you don’t know why that’s relavent), and my hubbie has a guaranteed DD after a few beers. It’s a win-win as long as he doesn’t overdo it.

tipsy sex is great with a well known lover…drunken sex with a one night stand is fantastic..although I must admit I tend to get a little too enthusiastic with the sex and wind up being sore the next day/week.. also have had a couple close calls where I thought I was maybe going to puke with all the sloshing around. Overall though I prefer sober sex because I really have no body issues when im getting down and dirty and I like to remember the experience!!!

I don’t mind tipsy sex, but hate drunk sex. Sober sex is better than the first two if you know the person well enough. Anyway, I always prefer smoking a little marijuana instead.

Personally, I think I’m more likely to get drunk around the same times I might be having sex. I’m not going to go out and get knackered if I’ve got work early, and I’m less likely to have sex too.

i am also a follower of the doobie before bed. It’s just enough relaxation to uninhibit you but without the sloppy clumsiness of being drunk.
Not to mention no dehydration, no accidentally kicking things over (or body parts), and no agreeing to stick it places you NEVER would have allowed while not drunk.
This site must have a pretty tame membership base; I was half expecting someone to have mentioned MDMA by now. Not that I subscribe to it at all.

@slestie: I’d really hate to have the long-term side effects that stem from overuse of MDMA. Brain shrinkage in exchange for an orgasm? No way.
With marijuana, there is SOME dehydration, but you’re right…not as bad as alcohol. Plus, you won’t feel like going for a drive afterward.

I don’t think the 75% thing is so much about needing to feel tipsy to get in bed with your spouse. I’m married with a young son. It’s nice to have a glass of wine or a (good) beer before sex because then it kind of feels like a date I guess. It’s more of the romance factor. I would say that for me it’s more like 25% of the time though.
And, yeah, drunk sex doesn’t work. Buzzed sex, awesome, because you can all giggly and playful.

the first time I have sex with someone I like to have a few drinks…just to loosen up and I like the taste of beer on my man’s breath (better than cigs). I have have sex both drunk and sober and they are both fine.
