Die, Trend, Die! 10 Popular Fads We Want Killed

10 Popular Fashions We Want Killed

Alexander Wang, do you see what thou hath brought? The designer debuted his denim vest earlier this year and the trickle-down effect has been, well, tragic. But the denim vest is not the only popular fashion trend we want to see take its place in the style graveyard. The hilarious fashion blog BLOGUE got my wheels churning with their suggestions—shorts with leggings, plaid shirts—but I was easily able to think of 10 more ... keep clicking for the remaining fashion trends we want to DIE!

I’d have to agree with everything, except the plaid shirts.  It just really depends on the shirt, the situation and the wearer, but it doesn’t have to be bad.  It’s one of those dangerous border-zone trends.

I agree with everything here and would like to add skinny jeans on larger people. I’m not trying to hate on anyone, and I’m a larger sized girl myself, but, when I see some people my size in them, it’s just unattractive. Actually, scratch that, I would really just like to add ill fitting clothes in general. If you’re a size 2 and wearing something that could fit a size 10, then you need a smaller size. Likewise, if you’re a size 10 and borrowing your size 2 friend’s clothes, you should probably consider getting something that fits properly. Frumpy and/or skin tight flatters no one!!

Peep-toe boots make no sense to me. No sense. They’re hideous and impractical.

@sam: I’m a non-skinny person who wears skinny jeans, but only to tuck into boots. Regular jeans have too much going on at the bottom. I think they can look fine if they’re the right size.

Multi-strand necklaces can rock, but sadly, most of them aren’t done well.  They have to be designed thoughtfully by someone who knows what they’re doing.  Otherwise, well, jewelrybox+blender look ensues.

@amandabear: no, I understand that. My peeve is mostly for the people (males and females) that wear them when they’re not the right size, causing everything to roll over the tops or out the bottom. A little muffin top can be understood, but, when your butt crack is part of that, it’s just really not working for you!

I’m not so much against kooky leggings as I am against people wearing them as pants. If your shirt is enough to cover the goods then feel free to rock the look. Otherwise, quit showin’ me your business and put pants on.

Skinny jeans work well to tuck into calf length boots because the boots bulk out the calves somewhat.  I’m very small but it’s hard for me to rock skinny jeans because of the way I’m built.  I have thicker thighs and when they’re so tight that they’re painted onto the calves its just *boom* look at my thighs.  There are some skinny jeans that work but it’s a hunt to find them.

I love my plaid flannel shirt BUT it’s fitted and has pearl snap buttons. I also enjoy wearing two or three different length necklaces at once, but the ones that are pre-joined tend to look messy to me.

I also think that the peep-toe boots are just silly but I have to confess to buying a pair when my bf told me that he thought they were a major turnon.  I didn’t get it at all but they were on sale and, well….let’s just say that they were worth the price!  wink

I own a pair of peep toe boots, so i can’t say anything about them!

Otherwise I agree with the list.  The one that makes me angry is the 3/4 sleeve on coats! A WINTER COAT WITH CUT OFF SLEEVES MAKES NO SENSE! I was winter coat shopping a little bit ago and I would got so mad that I kept running into these damn things, literally at one point I could feel tears welling up in my eyes I was getting so mad (I’m a crier)! Like what is the purpose of them?! I am in WI, you need long sleeves and long gloves here, not just one or the other!Plus it just makes you look like you got freakin’ Stretch Armstrong limbs, or your just some freaky long armed circus freak!  It’s just wrong! I mean, great my elbows are warm and toasty, but I got frost bite on the remaining 1/4 of my arm, oh yeah, that’s sexy! So dumb.

The only one I don’t agree with is the over sized totes one, but mainly because of the examples you used. On the Olsen twins, they do look pretty massive, but when you take into account just how tiny those girls are, the totes really aren’t as large as they appear. But I suppose picking a purse that doesn’t completely dwarf you would still apply.

Oh, and Urban Outfitters (who I can tell the screen shot was taken from) had a lot of Where the Wild Things Are merchandise before the movie came out, and they’re really the only ones I’ve seen with it so far. When I got back to school after summer vacation though, I was overwhelmed by how much their merchandise had increased when I walked into the store. It was like the entire first section was devoted solely to the book/movie.

I do remember going there last year and thinking how weird it was that they had Where the Wild Things are shirts, before I knew they were making a movie.

I think people should wear what makes them feel AWESOME.  I feel AWESOME in ridiculous leggings.  Guess I do want to show off my thighs to the universe.

If it makes a person feel good and can pull it off (ie a body that would not completely offend the world if they wore it), then I say wear it!

See? SEE? This is exactly what I’ve been saying about crop-sleeved coats all along! Thank you, Amelia and bethlynn00! So many cute coats, irreparably ruined by the ridiculous-looking, impractical, illogical 3/4 sleeves. I don’t want to freeze my forearms off, and I don’t want to look like I’m wearing a coat meant for a child. The bane of my effing life, those damned things.

Well, not quite. But close.

However… I can’t agree on the high-waisted tapered jeans. I’m wearing a pair right now. They’re my favorite pair of jeans, I’ve had them since, like, 10th grade (so, 5 years—they’re about to die). They’re a better alternative to skinny jeans for those of us who are not exactly rail-thin, since they remove the muffin top and don’t cling to the calves like skinnies do; these that I’m wearing are the pants that I personally look my most proportional in (in terms of butt-to-thigh-to-calf ratios)—but that’s just this particular pair. I guess I can’t endorse the style in general.

As a resident of Portland, OR (aka Hipsterville, USA) I would like to add skinny jeans to this list. No caveats or exceptions. I personally believe that in order for civilization to continue, skinny jeans must die. Their continued survival only hastens the spread of some of the greatest threats to mankind; ironic facial hair, PBR and American Apparel.

I really have to disagree about the over the knee boots. I love them, and have a ton in different colors and wear them all the time. When not worn with miniskirts it’s a cute look I love.

The other day I was walking to class and I saw a fad that I thought had FINALLY died out but no, it still lives and it was nasty:

Uggs and shorts.

@ Mod Potter: I saw that today at the dining hall. I was freeeeezing, wearing long pants, jacket, scarf, hat… she was wearing jacket, scarf, Uggs and shorts. I just don’t get it. Why make an effort to be warm at all when you’re just going to slap on a pair of itty bitty shorts and leave ten miles of bare legs hanging out there? And when it’s University-logo athletic shorts that you’re pairing with your Uggs… I don’t even know. I don’t know what kind of style statement that would even be. I guess the “I don’t care about style” statement. “I don’t care about style or comfort.” Hmmm.

I actually saw a short sleeved coat when I was shopping around for a new one for the winter. It was so cute; except for the completely useless short sleeves. I was very sad; and perplexed. Who in the world would really wear one?

I agree with everyone who mentioned skinny jeans.  9/10 of us are going to regret those in ten years—but not as badly as we’ll regret leggings.  (Seriously.  They are not pants, and they do not look good under dresses/skirts/shorts—they make most women’s legs look stumpy.)

I refuse to surrender my multi-strand necklaces, though.  Done well, they’re so chic.

How can you tell with certainty that the bags are oversized when the person carrying them is undersized?

My sis just bought a 3/4 sleeved coat!! She just recently moved out of Florida, and has NO idea how cold it will get. When she tried it on, I told her it looked like she was wearing a childs coat…....b.c it DOES! I don’t understand why you would only need oart of your arm to be warm.

This article is living proof that all people should wear what they want instead of following trends or trendy websites.

It was only a month ago we had this:

last month we had this:

We should all wear what we want!!

The 3/4 length coat is chic AND functional. In case you didn’t know, it’s meant to be worn with elbow length gloves.
