How To Get Rid Of Chestne (And Backne)

Blake Lively

As the Daily Mail so nicely pointed out, Blake Lively‘s got some concealer on her chest (check it out above)—and what, pray tell, is she covering up? No idea, but when I try to throw cover-up on my chest it’s for one reason—chestne. (Acne on your chest for those not occasionally plagued by it.) It’s the annoying little skin secret you don’t hear about much, but loads of people suffer from it. Fortunately, I’ve got a few tricks and preventative measures you can try out to get rid of it. Blake, listen up!

My first to-do: always shower right after a workout. Like, immediately. You can’t have that sweat sitting on your skin and getting all in-between your skin and sports bra. Two other shower tricks? Switch to body wash that contains salicylic acid. I love Mario Badescu’s AHA Body Wash or Neutrogena’s Body Clear Pink Grapefruit Body Wash.

Also, make sure you lift your hair off your back and chest after you rinse your conditioner off. (Any leftover conditioner goop that might be on your skin can clog your pores. Ick.) You can try astringent pads—they’ll help lift off the dead skin cells and left-over debris that might be hanging out on your skin. Or, in place of the pads, some people just use a cotton ball dipped in apple cider vinegar. (I’ve never tried it, but some peeps swear by it.)

And an obvious tip: treat your breaking-out chest just like you would your breaking-out face—smear on a pimple cream before bed. (But beware of staining your clothes or bedsheets. Look for one with salicylic acid—not benzoyl peroxide—since you won’t have to worry about it staining!) [Daily Mail]

Too bad whomever did her make-up just used the same concealer on her chest as they did on her face.
I use Neutrogena’s pink grapefruit body wash every day and I really haven’t had a real breakout since I started using it. And, it doesn’t leave my skin crazy dry either, which is just as bad as chestne, but I only use it on my back and chest, I use a dove bar everywhere else.

I was happy to see that the Neutrogena stuff doesn’t dry my skin out either (I don’t use the pink grapefruit version because at Target it’s $1 more, I just use the regular orange stuff). I don’t know if it makes a difference, but I just squeeze some out into my hands, rub on my skin (for me it’s my upper arms) and then let it sit on there for a minute or two before rinsing off. I guess I’m hoping that it will give the stuff a little more time to do its magic!

A friend of mine washes and conditions her hair first thing, then puts it up in one of those big clips for the rest of the shower so she can wash her body and not worry about any conditioner getting all over her skin after sudsing up.

I use the Neutrogena Acne Stress body wash plus astringent.  Unfortunately, I have very chronic chest and back acne and have for the past 15 years.  These will help reduce whiteheads but the only thing that has ever cleared my skin was tanning but for obvious reasons, I would rather deal with acne than tan.

i have folliculitis on my ....seat. Nothing hotter than getting naked with a guy and having a buttful of pimply looking things.

I use a benzoyl peroxide wash and occasionally a salicylic acid spot treatment but a medication from the dermatologist works much better.

But washing with the benzoyl peroxide wash 2 times a day and after workouts seems to help the most. Ugh what a pain.

Something else worth trying is switching up your laundry soap and dryer sheets.  My skin is so ridiculously sensitive that I use hypo-allergenic laundry soap and those dryer ball things.  And @Lynn, I do the same thing - I wash and condition my hair first and then finish by washing my back and chest with a soap that I know doesn’t break me out.  It’s all about trial and error with your body (and laundry) products..Sigh.

What do they call it when your upper arms and shoulders break out? Anyways, I get that and even some backne or chestne if I don’t watch out. I keep the conditioner off those areas. I don’t buy acne body wash, since only those parts break out every once in a while. So I use the same stuff I use to treat facial acne. Like apricot scrub, zit cream and toner with salicylic acid (that stuff works wonders).

It looks like Neutrogena contains an endocrine disruptor - which turns men into women and women into men :-|

Unless of course Neutrogena is a sponsor, in that case, I love Neutrogena!

the bumps on upper arms and legs could be keratosis pilaris… i looked it up webmd.com because i got sick of having bumps on my arms, and exfoliating with something like neutrogena, with acids to slough off dead skin is perfect.

Meg - yep it might be KP. I use the Neutrogena body wash in the shower and then a lotion with lactic acid at night. Some people will say that KP can only be treated with salicylic acid, some will say only lactic acid can treat it, but I find the most success using both at once
