This weekend, The New York Times “Style” section had a story about guys who have embraced their love of cats. I’ve come to the conclusion that women are either passionately pro- or anti-cat guy—turns out we have one of each on our staff! After the jump, Wendy Atterberry and Catherine state their cases. Here comes the pun I have been dying to use for the last three sentences—the claws come out!

I think any woman who loves cats would adore a man who shared her passion for them. I’m all for them - cats, AND the men who love them.

The issue for me and a lot of my friends is CAT ALLERGIES! I never date anyone with cats for that reason. And it works both ways. If you’re a gal who opts for a cat because they’re more convenient than dogs, just realize that you’re going to rule out a fair number of potential mates.

When I met my boyfriend he had this complete bachelor pad and his bachelor cat “Lou” to go along with it. I’ve always kind of felt good about him owning his own cat that he rescued from a shelter. Shows that he’s got a heart, patience, and the desire for companionship. Now we own a home together and have two cats. They are like our furry children and it makes me feel great to know if I’m away… he’ll still take great care of them.

I’ve dated a few cat men. As a thumbnail rule, I find they’re both more attentive and more independent. Some, however, don’t mind when kitty hangs around when we’re making love, which isn’t my favorite thing.

atlgirl - just as many people have allergies to dogs… Personally I’m allergic to dogs, but I love them anyways, when I visit my sister’s dog, I just take an allergy pill 20 minutes before I go.
I have 2 cats of my own and they are my babies. :O)

I’m torn on this, because I’m one of those weird people who has an equal love for cats AND dogs. So on one hand, a guy admitting his affinity for a furry critter (and his ability to take responsibility for the well-being of another creature) is fine by me. On the other hand, I’ve often (not always) found it to be an indicator that he dislikes dogs, which is not going to fly with me.
And I went out for a few weeks with a guy who I swear was gauging my potential on whether or not his cats liked me the first time I went back to his place. that was an interesting experience.

I think it’s cool if a guy likes cats (or dogs) as long as he’s not pushy about it.
Personally, I’ve had cats my entire life and as soon as I moved into my own apartment after college, I got a cat. He’s the sweetest guy and I couldn’t date somebody who hated him (or cats in general). I mean, what kind of a person hates animals?
