This weekend “He’s Just Not That Into You” topped the box office charts with a whopping $27,465,000. Dismissed as “puerile” by the New York Times and called “charming” by E!, the star-studded ensemble flick (Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson, Ben Affleck and more) may not be Oscar material. Still, it pays satisfying homage to the books that have guided us through dating hell.
Whether you’re agonizing over that first date with the first class schmuck or you’re an old hand at husband hunting, reading has always been fundamental to decoding love. We break down the five essential and endlessly enlightening dating guides of all time, so you don’t have to.

Though I’ve thankfully left my self-help/dating book phase behind (I used to work at a library so it was hard to resist hilarious 80s romance advice tomes like “Sexual Chemistry: What it is and How to Use it”), I will always have a soft spot for “Why Men Love Bitches.” It’s really all about loving yourself and not taking #&@$% from anyone, male or female. I highly recommend it!

“The Rules” sounds like it gives good advice on how to make me, and I bet alot of other “good guys”, RUN FOR THE HILLS. As for ‘never, ever’ calling me, the message *I* would get from that is “she’s not that into me”, and I’d lose her phone number….

“Become Your Own Match-maker” sounds like a manual for gold-diggers. It’s fine to be a gold-digger if you succeed; but if you DON’T, and if any of the rest of us (the Thousandaire’s Club) get a whiff of it, well that wouldn’t be good…..
