Is It Fair For Mya To Compete On “Dancing With The Stars”?
Mya Harrison earned 27 points for her rumba dance on last night’s episode of “Dancing with the Stars.” The judges gushed on and on about her great performance, which I have to say was very sexy and entertaining. But ever since Stacy Keibler competed on “DWTS” in season two I’ve had the same question: Is it fair for trained dancers to compete against Average Joe celebrities?
Both Stacy and Mya took ballet, tap, and jazz classes when they were younger, and Mya even had the opportunity to study tap under Savion Glover and teaches dance at her own arts foundation. Stacy and recent “DWTS” contestant Melissa Rycroft were both professional cheerleaders for football teams. Although ballroom dancing is very different from tap, ballet, and jazz dancing, contestants with this kind of training no doubt have an advantage because they’re used to moving their bodies to a rhythm, taking direction, and memorizing routines. Similarly, both Stacy and Melissa placed third in their seasons. We’ll have to wait and see about Mya.
What do you think? Should dancers compete against non-dancers on “Dancing with the Stars”?

i’m confused why the judges were so impressed with this performance. it was a lot of hand waving and not a lot of footwork or dancing.
also, i’m pretty sure they have contestants with professional training on to 1) up the caliber of dancing and raise the bar and 2) spark a debate and raise publicity. as long as i get to see some awesome dancing, i don’t care who is doing it! but yeah this performance by mya was lame and disappointing.

I think it’s fine and fair. I’m sure some of the other celebrities have been thru dancing, like the athletes, they usually take dance to work on their coordination, so I think it just makes the other contestants work a little harder.

why is it that this question is only coming up for these two women, when there have been two male boybanders who definitely had extensive dance training on the show as well?

I called her winning the season when they first announced the contestants because she has done ballroom/latin dance, in dance movies no less. I think she is awesome and a good dancer, but it does make it much harder for the non-dancers to compete against the dancers (boy band or otherwise) and figure skaters.

1) I think it’s totally fair—the better dancers, which you mentioned, rarely win. It’s usually the best characters who win, not the best dancers. Besides, it’s DWTS—it’s all just a stepping stone for these people, back into the spotlight.
2) @secretstevie: that’s typical for a ballroom rumba—it’s mostly hip sway over a standing leg, very slow. Not the most exciting dance, but very pretty when it’s done right.

Whether its fair or not is moot—-the episodes are in the can.

I do not feel that it is fair to the other dancers that have not had the priviledge of having her experience. I do not think she is that great of a dancer I would rather watch Donny Osmond or Kelly Osborne these two are great dancers. My Cats dancer better than she does and they do it without any training.
