D.C. Gossip: Will Obama Make Hillary Clinton His Vice President?

Hillary Clinton

Unsubstantiated rumors and vicious gossip isn’t just for Hollywood—our nation’s capitol loves spreadin’ rumors, too. The latest buzz out of D.C. is that President Obama will drop his vice president, Joe Biden, from his 2012 re-election ticket and run with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as his VP instead. The logic supposedly is that the president would make this switcheroo so Clinton could run for president in 2016, as Biden might be “too old” by then. [U.S. News & World Reports]

I’m extremely doubtful this gossip is true (although it would be sweet to have Amy Poehler guest on SNL again!). Here’s why:

  1. Clinton told NBC’s Ann Curry that she plans to retire after her term is up as Secretary of State.
  2. Clinton already ran for president in 2008. As far as I am concerned, she doesn’t need to do time as VP in order to apply for the job!
  3. By all accounts, Clinton is doing a great job as Secretary of State, why would the Prez would change a winning game? He’s not dumb.
  4. John McCain was 72 when he ran for president, so I don’t see why a then-74-year-old Biden couldn’t hypothetically run for president in 2016, too. (Not that septugenarians make ideal presidential candidates, but that’s not the point.)

But! On the other hand, if Sarah Palin seriously does run for president in 2012 or 2016, Hillary already serving time as SOS or VP would serve to underscore Palin’s lack of experience on the federal level. Oh, politics. You are so confusing.

What do you guys think?

I certainly hope not.

I was a big fan of Hillary’s when she made her first run for the senate.  I thought, “Oh, this’ll be great, we’ve got a strong Democrat in congress who’s not afraid to speak her mind and stand up for the interests of our party.  She’s just what we need to keep these neocon a-holes from steamrolling the entire country.”

And then she proved me very, very wrong.  As far as I’m concerned, she might as well have a big, red elephant pinned to her blouse.

@C.Munro : I have always said that Hillary and Rudy Guiliani should have switched parties.  She is a republican in a democrats clothing due to her husband and the fact that back then the Dems were the only one who would have considered a woman, and they still are since the GOP basically chose a joke of a candidate to show how “pregressive” they are.  Guliani on the other hand was a very liberal Republican on A LOT of things and should have been a Dem but when he was looking to come to power in NY it was the GOP that pulled the strings.

Yeah, Hillary actually was a member of the Young Republicans in college.  Guliani, though, is too hawkish to fit in with today’s Democratic party in my view.  He’d have done just fine in LBJ’s day, though.

oh if ur ever going to meet her in person, i recommend not wearing a military uniform, as shell treat you like a second class citizen, and bash the military to the people she talks to right in front of you.  shes a snake and had she been the veep on obamas ticket i would have regretfully abstained from voting…  and this one meant a lot to me.

I actually voted for Bob Barr, I think more people should stop voting along party lines and vote for real choice, which would be helping a third party get the 10% of votes needed to get federal funding so that we can have more choices for President in the future, or at least more real choices.  I wasn’t excited about either candidate, I actually liked McCain and McCain/Guiliani would have likely gotten my vote, but Falin kept me away from that.  my brother suggested that I look to a thrid party candidate and see who works for me.  I actually liked Bob Barr, http://www.bobbarr.org , and any man who could eat cheese that he thought came from a woman’s breast milk and NOT vomit all over the place, is the guy I want in a crisis!  smile

It’s years too early for this post.  The political winds change too often.

Hillary has been around long enough to know that she should keep her options open. She may say that she plans on retiring, but that doesn’t mean she will. As far as being VP, that is Obama’s decision, not hers. What is she going to do if she isn;t asked to be VP? Quit? If she does then she will appear to be self-serving and that won;t help her chances in 2016. Obama doesn’t *need* Hillary in the second seat to win again and dumping Biden (for anyone) would be admitting he made a mistake in selecting Biden.
