Crystal Renn Says Success Comes To Those Who Are True To Themselves
Model Crystal Renn appeared on “Good Morning America” this morning to promote her book, Hungry: A Young Model’s Story of Appetite, Ambition, and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves. Crystal was discovered by a model scout as a teen in Clinton, MS, and was told she could be a supermodel. But there was a catch: She would need to lose 70 pounds off her 5’9” frame first. She did and got a $250,000 contract.
But after starving herself for years, Crystal decided she didn’t want to abuse her body anymore and decided to let it be the way it wanted to be, which was a size 12. While this isn’t the usual size fashion models come in, Crystal says she has been more successful since being true to herself, appearing on the cover of four international editions of Vogue, in various ad campaigns, and on the runway for Vena Cava, Heatherette, and Jean-Paul Gaultier. We’re not models, but her message is one we should all heed: Be yourself and you’ll get farther in life. Aww ... [GMA]

She’s one of the most commonly used models in Lane Bryant catalogs. I was flipping through mine on my couch the other night when my boyfriend said “Are these girls supposed to be considered fat? Is this the place you won’t let me go with you in the mall that you call ‘the fat girl store’? You’re insane. She’s gorgeous and so are you.”

I find inspiration in Crystal Renn’s story yet it is still heartbreaking to see/hear about soooooooo many young women who want to be models having to endure this. As much as I love fashion, reading the gamut of mags like Vouge to W, I see that bone thin is the norm. Whatever happened to healthy? When did this whole gaunt, deathly look come into popularity?
I find I like the clothes but dislike the model’s appearance because they often times look miserable and frail, again not healthy.
I’m glad that Renn continues to achieve her dreams but it is truly terrible to be in an industry that wouldn’t except your body for what it is. The clothing size is just number and measurement- it’s not who we are.

Being true to yourself is extremely important. However being true to yourself does not equal success. How does this explain the success of Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, who spend every waking moment being anything but true to themselves?
