Live Alone and Like It

This little book of advice for single women was written back in 1936. The author, Marjorie Hillis, was a fancy pants editor at Vogue who was single until age 49, three years after this book was published. She didn’t seem to mind being a bachelorette and wanted her fellow singletons to live it up. Her old timey advice is amusing, but remains applicable – there’s even a chapter titled “Pleasures of A Single Bed.” [$11.89, Amazon.com]

We’re giving away five copies of Live Alone and Like It: The Classic Guide for the Single Woman, but you have to work if you want one. The five best commenters for this coming week—from today, Friday, Dec. 12 through Thursday, Dec. 19—will be awarded with one. So, be as clever, smart, and original as you can! Living alone is like finding the perfect pair of Jeans…they fit all the time and if they don’t you only have yourself to blame! When it’s all yours…you know exactly what you are leaving and what you are coming home to and only have yourself to blame!

Living alone and liking it was once a connoisseurs event. There were always plenty of single women,  bemoaning their fate, whining and complaining until they obtained either a roommate, cat or man (or some combination therein.) Those of us who new the real deal and liked it, would try to sell ourselves as members of a private club. “It’s an acquired taste,” we would say. “Like certain caviar and wine.”
The reality is that it becomes addictive. NO one to answer to, NO modestly issues, No cares about what anybody thinks - but you.
Who wouldn’t love that?
Ah, but we tried to keep it secret. We would advertize our loneliness to everyone while secretly reveling in the fact that we could go home, get buck naked and eat Ben & Jerry’s while watching whatever we damn well pleased. And we did. And we got used to it.
Which is why I *still* live alone. And like it.
