Craighton Berman DIY Coil Lamp Kit

While we could all hang an unadorned light bulb from an extension cord for light, most people prefer chandeliers, light fixtures, and lamps that add a decorative touch to rooms. Industrial designer Craighton Berman, however, took the simplest electric lighting elements—a cord and a light bulb—and turned them into a high-design table lamp. This marks the first time an orange 100-foot extension cord has looked stylish. [$75, Craighton Berman]

Just so people are clear, what you get for your $75 are two pieces of acrylic and a lightbulb socket. You still need to buy the 100’ extension cord and the light bulb. Then you need to snap the acrylic together (probably 10 seconds), insert the socket, plug in one end of the cord, then wrap it, then add the bulb.

I’m sure it’s not a lot of work, but just be aware that your $75 gets you two pieces of acrylic and a $3 socket. However, for just $75 more, you can get a $20 extension cord wrapped around the acrylic for you. Oh, and a signature is also included in that price.

I think it’s a nice idea, but $75 is excessive for what you get.
