You gotta love dads. Mine knows I’m a card-carrying feminist, but my entire life, he’s hassled me to watch these totally cheesy, sexist/racist John Wayne flicks where the macho cowboy with a gun and a lasso rescues the damsel in distress from the “Indians.” No, Dad, I’m
still not interested in watching “The Searchers” with you. But in honor of your adorable cowboy complex (which will never be realized because you live in New England), I’ve pulled together a few no-bull
Father’s Day gifts that any little lady would do right by getting for her pops.

Long-time reader and first-time commenter, so it’s a little odd that I choose to start with this, but: “The Searchers” is a masterpiece. I’m not arguing that it’s not sexist or racist, but that is due more to the time period in which it was made rather than Ford’s inclinations. But if you were to succumb to a single western request by your dad, The Searchers would be it: the protagonist is a guy who “believes more in bullets than in words” and through the course of his obsession, he finds his own humanity. But that being said: it’s pretty racist. But if it would make your dad happy to see it with you, you could do worse.
End film school rant.

I prefer Blade Runner.
