Cool Coasters That Keep Your Furniture (And Your Drink) Happy

Cool Drink Coasters

With the beautiful weather these days, I’ve been keeping cool by wearing cute summer dresses and staying barefoot as long as possible. I’ve also been making use of my ice maker and blender to stay cool. Smoothies, iced tea, you name it and I’ve made it (or plan to!). Nothing beats sitting down with a cold drink, a fun book, and the afternoon passing by. But wait, don’t forget the coaster! Nobody likes excess moisture, especially your wood furniture. Whether you have a valuable antique or a cheap Craigslist find, your furniture is supposed to last. Quite unlike the fast fashion scene we’ve been experiencing, it’s hard to buy and then throw away your furniture after a season or two. So that’s why we’ve got to take care of it to keep it in shipshape. Take a look at the set of slate coasters from Crate and Barrel. You can keep track of the owners of each drink by writing your name on the coaster with a piece of chalk. Another favorite are the pinecone shaped coasters made out of durable vinyl. Take a look at the slideshow for more!

The slate ones are cool, but $20 for four thin cut pieces of slate is… a bit steep (not obscene, just steep), and I’d worry about the sharp corners scratching things (yes, I know they have felt on the bottoms - but those corners look non-furniture-friendly).

The ones that catch my eye are the Nambé ones. Yes, they’re way more expensive, but I’ve been a Nambé fan for years, and they’re truly classy looking and stack beautifully. Of the ones in the slideshow, they’re the set I’d pick. If, well, I could justify $21/coaster. Which I can’t. But, oh my, they’re compelling. They’d be more practical with cork or sandstone tops, but the wood is nice.

I’m not a fan of glass/ceramic tops. Not only do they clank when you set drinks on them, but the water inevitably drains onto the table when you pick the coasters up later on.

coasters are essential in our house, we’ve got lots of antique tables and sideboards, the kids often leave marks all over them. Anyone who puts a drink down on my furniture without one gets a clip round the ear.
