“Condom Worshippers” Rejoice!
Federal funding for abstinence-only education was stripped from the budget in the House subcommittee, and the Christian News Wire isn’t too happy about this. According to them, “There is evidence that abstinence education is an effective primary prevention strategy.” It’s just, um, nowhere to be found. When Congress ordered a study in 2007 on abstinence-only ed, it was (shockingly!) revealed that “students who participated in sexual abstinence programs were just as likely to have sex as those who did not.” The study also found that these students were just as likely to use contraception when they did have sex as those who did not participate.
Bristol Palin, Jamie-Lynn Spears, and the other 750,000 teenagers who get pregnant every year are yet another reminder that abstinence is, as Palin herself said, “unrealistic.” So, after having wasted over a billion dollars of the federal budget over the past ten years funding abstinence-only education, it’s about time we stopped.
But beware, because the President of the National Abstinence Clearinghouse, Leslee Unruh, has a very serious warning for all us pro-protection people: “We’ve got news for the condom worshipers, abstinence education is not going away any time soon. Taxpayers will not tolerate their money being used for ideological latex-only programs and the molestation of their children’s minds and future.” [Opposing Views]

Heh heh. I’d agree, except I’d replace “latex” with “abstinence”. And, really, I’d have to say that…
...oh, wait, gotta go. It’s time for my thrice-daily bow to my box of Magnums.

reminder that abstinence is, as Palin herself said, “unrealistic…. I just have to disagree with that…im twenty and fully plan on being a virgin when i get married. its not unrealistic. its just not popular or convinent anymore… I’m happy they got rid of abstinent only sex education though.. I think it was a waste.. but i do hope they at least teach abstinence as well as normal protection as a combo course and not just all of one way of protecting oyurself… Balance,America,Balance! thats all we really need

@wonder-bread - again, abstinence is part of any GOOD comprehensive sex ed course. Also, just because you are succeeding in your personal goal to remain abstinent (nothing wrong with that, by any means. kudos on your mission, to date, accomplished) doesn’t mean that abstinence is realistic as a dominant pregnancy prevention message in the absence of actual education regarding contraceptives ... which is what the Palin family message seems to be portraying. What works for you isn’t necessarily going to be an effective public health solution to the problem of teen pregnancy.

I’d gladly wear the slogan “Condom Worshiper” on a t-shirt. It would be much better than a big prego belly and a dead beat baby daddy.
As Joyy said- it’s all about the balance. Teach all forms and the kids can take what they want from it and form their own decisions- with the guidance of their family.

In the 8th grade I had a sex-ed teacher show us condoms, encouraged us to touch spermacidel foam and threw a diaphragm across the room like a frisbee, and I STILL didn’t have sex for the first time until I was 23. I’m glad we finally have an administration that understands that giving information isn’t the same thing as encouragement.

This article references another study with slightly different results:

Kids still have sex, but use contraception LESS, when in abstinence-only programs which hide contraception information. Scary.

As the Education outreach coordinator for an AIDS task force in Indiana, seeing things like this just makes my day. The kids are doing it, we know they are doing it, deep down their parents know they are doing it, at least they can know about the barrier methods.
I am proud to be a condom worshiper!

Hello! Tax payer here! I would like to confirm that I will not only tolerate this, but I will go as far as to endorse it!
