Catfight On The Soccer Field
Ah, Friday. What better day for a catfight video? Only, in this case, the “fight” is actually a “sport,” albeit a game in which the ladies of the Brigham Young University and New Mexico State University University of New Mexico soccer teams exhibit some very unsportsmanlike conduct. Elbow to the solar plexus? Check. Ball kicked into head? Check. Girl pulled to the ground by her hair? Double check. Where’s a referee when you need ‘em? If I see New Mexico centerback Elizabeth Lambert coming down a grassy field towards me, I’m running in the opposite direction. [BuzzFeed]

This does not surprise me at all. I have played on both girls and boys soccer teams, and girls are WAY more viscous and aggressive in confrontation than the boys on the field.

so where was the red card and the suspension? professional football players get fined and suspended for singular, less evil occurrences on the field.

This video is the best response ever to people who argue women aren’t cut out for combat. We can fight just as dirty as the men can.

I just wanted to correct one thing, it’s not New Mexico State (NMSU), but University of New Mexico (UNM).

I used to play soccer in New Mexico until I got a ball to the face and got a concussion that I’m still convinced changed my personality. For the better though, so whatevs. That hair-pulling maneuver was super intense though!

To throw her to the ground like that, the yank on the hair had to be HARD. And if you notice, she laid there after and didn’t get right back up. The New Mexico player deserved a red card at least 3 different times in there.

I play in an ADULT women’s league. I personally am pushing 30. There is no lower age limit that I know of. There are a lot of high school and college teams that play in the off season. I am constantly surprised by the lack of sportsmanship and the blatent dirty play that goes on with these teams. It goes unrepremanded by the coaches or parents and actually seems encouraged. I don’t remember any of my teams being like that at that age. It is just a trend that I have been noticing and it is a shame because I love soccer and I might not want my daughters participating in that environment someday.

the girl from new mexico is disgusting. thats not sports. i hope she gets suspended for the year. any male NCAA football player who played a whole game that way would be, and justly. she isnt giving womens sports a bad name… shes giving SPORTS a bad name. what a disgrace to the human race.

To quote Michael Wilbon “Don’t be naive, Tony.” Behavior worse than this happens on the bottom of a football pile frequently. As Mucho says football players caught behaving in this way are punished but not always to fit the crime as my Gators have shown, winning > sportsmanship. At the Florida/Georgia game Brandon Spikes was caught attempting to gouge a Georgia player’s eyes in the pile. His punishment? 1/2 game suspension. The NCAA needs to clamp down on dirty play because the colleges are not going to jeopardize their chances of wining of their own volition.

Side note: That’s not New Mexico State University - the score says “UNM” or University of New Mexico… Don’t bad mouth the Aggies when the Lobos are at fault. =)

agreed the same dirty plays happen in mens sports. didnt mean to make it men vs women… meant more like high profile sports vs low profile. i think the FL LB should have been suspended for longer than that, too… the NCAA usually lets the schools set a punishment, then if the school doesnt punish the player strictly enough, theyll put the hammer down on the school. wouldnt shock me if the NCAA, in 2013 or so, said FL had to forfeit some wins this guy played in. id be surprised (pleasantly) but not shocked. urban myer seems to be a bit of a chump.

As much as I love my Gators and Urban Meyer (phhbbt to you, sir) I agree that a much longer suspension was called for. Ultimately athletes and schools need to realize that it is a game and not worth carelessly risking someone’s health and life.

Brandon Spikes asked for his suspension to be extended to a whole game. I agree that anyone who doesn’t think this and the eye gouging doesn’t happen EVERY. SINGLE. GAME is very naive. Granted, in that video it was the same girl involved in multiple incidents in one game and I think she has been suspended and banned from team practices and facilities pending further action.

Don’t I know it, I was there for Spurrier’s last year and every new basketball season we have to play “will he or won’t he?” with Billy Donovan.

so spikes is willing to sit out the vandy game? tough punishment… and i play semi-pro football, and participated in division I athletics (wrestling). “this” and eye gouging dont happen every single game. they happen. but 98% of competitors are sportsmen, and not a-holes.

Another correction: The only time a “catfight” took place is in your title, Susannah. These were out-and-out one-sided attacks by one crazy-aggressive opponent – who is suspended indefinitely, btw. “Catfight” trivializes the topic, and further perpetuates negative female stereotypes when more than one female is present in a given scenario, rendering them cartoons.

sorry, but having done more than a little refereeing there is a number of things in that video that should have been red-carded. Elbowing and bumping for position are allowed but when she hauled back and landed a swinging blow that should have been red carded. Throwing a foot in from behind that did not contact the ball should have been red-carded. And the full on kick that close to the face of the player, whether it hit the ball or not, should have been at least dangerous play and quite possibly a yellow or red card.
Yes, the players were out of control, but they did not become instantly out of control.
