“Cat Ladies” Documentary Features Woman With 123 Cats

As “Grey Gardens” — both the documentary and the HBO film — proved, crazy cat ladies make good cinema. Debuting this week at the Silverdocs film festival in Washington DC, a new documentary, called simply, “Cat Ladies” hopes to capitalize on the popularity and cultural interest in the strangely endearing stereotype of a woman gone mad. While the one-hour film, which follows four ladies with a #&@$%-ton of felines (one has 123!), is supposed to reveal a “sensitive and emotionally honest portrait of women whose lives and self-worth have become intractably linked to cats,” it’s hard not to laugh or cringe in disgust at some of the women’s antics. I will definitely see this doc. I am cat obsessed (and am tempted to give a shout-out to my kitten, Cleo, here), but I think two would be my limit. How does one get a cat sitter for 123 cats? Or maybe that’s the point—that she would never go anywhere because her life is all about these cats.

In the past I’ve worked out my cat-obsession by volunteering at no-kill cat shelters. There’s nothing better than going home to my (somewhat) normal and clean home with just two kitties after spending a couple hours surrounded by hundreds of them.

I freakin adore my cat, Bubba. He is my best friend and the sweetest thing I have ever encountered. I would jump in front of a freight train to save him, I swear. That being said, he vomits on the carpet, drops like 2 deuces a day and scratches my furniture. I think I’ll just stick with one cat at a time. If I could potty train him, then maybe I would consider getting another cat for him to have company. Has anyone ever managed to potty train a cat?(besides Robert DeNiro in Meet the Parents)...
