The Bush Administration’s new reproductive health proposal is out and it’s getting some serious heat. In the proposal, recipients of federal aid for health programs (i.e. hospitals, health clinics, and phamacies) must “certify that they will not refuse to hire nurses and other providers who object to abortion and even certain types of birth control.” In other words, a women’s clinic cannot refuse to hire a nurse on the basis that she won’t perform abortions or dispense birth control or Plan B. Additionally, the proposal also classifies abortion as “any of the various procedures—including the prescription, dispensing and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action—that results in the termination of the life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation.” Made my head hurt too, but the last part is important—some people argue that the birth control pill and emergency contraception can prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg, therefore those forms of birth control and Plan B would be considered abortion under the proposal. So what do you think about this? Are you worried that the language in this proposal is a step in the direction of reversing Roe V. Wade or do you agree that abortion has been defined properly? Weigh in! [Salon: Broadsheet]

Uh, I may be wrong, but doesn’t the pill suppress ovulation, so there is no egg to fertilize, which means no life is terminated.

Maybe it’s referring to the fact that if you do somehow become pregnant while you’re on the pill and then continue to take the pill (like if you don’t realize your pregnant) pregnancy could be terminated?

I agree with anika also the plan b does the same thing to the egg , and for that matter wouldn’t the spermicide on condoms be banned since they kill the sperm preventing them from fertalizing the egg.

Ok so did Bush only have sex twice in his life? He either wears a condom with spermicide on them, as Nyle1 pointed out, or his wife is popping the pills as well. And this may sound ignorant of me but aren’t church and state suppose to be separate? becuase, I’m sure that this soap box which he is standing on is supported by his religious beliefs.

Bush should be doing better things with his limited time in office instead of trying to force incredibly idiotic bills like this through.
I wonder if his daughters ever used birth control pills before. I can guess that they probably have which makes him not only a moron, but a hypocrite.
People need to lay off and stop dictating what women can and cannot do to their own bodies. It’s bad enough every iota of privacy has been invaded as is, but now our rights are being stripped too? Not cool.

That is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. I’m glad he is leaving the office soon.
