Bristol Palin Doesn’t Think Mom’s Favorite Method Of Birth Control Is Very Realistic
New mom, Bristol Palin, appeared on Fox News last night to talk about what it’s like to be a new mother, in an interview she scheduled without giving her famous mom, Sarah Palin, much warning. Then she and Greta Van Susteren got to talking about abstinence and Bristol dropped a bomb, saying, “abstinence is not realistic at all.” So much for Mommy Knows Best!

I always wondered why no one ever pointed out Bristol Palin’s situation as a ripe example of how ineffective abstinence-only education is. I’m glad they left the poor kid alone as much as they did during the campaign, but she’s kind of the poster child for how kids deserve better than well-intentioned lies! They need comprehensive education and access to contraceptives. When will this sink in at a national level?!??

I’m glad Bristol is voicing her own opinions on this issue, rather than simply allowing her mother’s views to be imposed on her. Obviously, the majority of teens are not going to practice abstinence when the media, their friends, and celebrities are all pointing them in the other direction. A lot of them also don’t have adults they truly trust in their lives, so they make decisions based on peer pressure and ask questions later. I am not naive enough to think that my daughter will not experiment in her teen years, so I have begun building the VERY age-appropriate foundation for proper communication when the time comes. I want her to know that I don’t have unrealistic expectations for her behavior, but I will not condone recklessness and she MUST protect herself and make educated choices. Too many parents either turn a blind eye to reality, or have a false sense of security.

Obviously this was an awkward issue for her to discuss publicly, but to me it seems as though she doesn’t even possess the vocabulary to even discuss this issue. When sex education doesn’t give people the tools to even discuss sex or contraception, that’s a BIG problem.

Like, she’s totally right. Some people are, like, going to be all abstinent and whatever but if they aren’t they totally need to have all of the information they need to make, like, the right choice.
I love that she said this btw.

What the hell does laziness have to do with this? Greta needs to back off. Like, I totally like, kinda like, feel bad for her and like…

I do agree with Bristol about the abstinence program not being realistic…
it’s not only not effective, it’s a complete waste of money!
but hey, you just had a baby and have real responsibility to deal with, could you be a *little* more articulate? like, um, like please?

While I agree that teaching abstinence only programs is not right (kids need all the information they can get), abstinence is very effective in preventing everything. I would know. And yeah, it’s hard, but I’m glad I’ve taken this route.
