When Boobs And Babies Don’t Mix

Find A Cure Before I Grow Boobies

Boobs and babies don’t mix ... their boobs, that is. I’ve seen enough pasties for kids and stripper poles for toddlers to get stabby about anything that sexualizes an impressionable kiddo. So I’m not too keen on the breast cancer awareness tees for little girls that say “Find A Cure! Before I Grow Boobies.” Clever T-shirt, yes. But as the aunt of three pre-school aged girls, I feel weird about anything that could draw a creepy person’s attention to their non-existent “boobies.” (FWIW, I’d balk if my nephew had a tee shirt that said “Testicular Cancer: Find A Cure Before My Balls Drop!” too.)  A pink ribbon or something would be just fine to raise awareness, thanks. What do you think: Are these T-shirts kinda icky or are they cute? [Zazzle.com]

personally, I think they’re cute. It drives the point home. These are our children and the risks keep getting higher. Let’s fix it now. Of course, I don’t think it’s possible to sexualize anyone by putting a saying on they’re shirt. In fact the tee shirts that say things about “your boyfriend” or “my ass” tend to just make the wearer look a little hopeless and desperate.

ICKY!
There are way too many perverted people out there. Why give them an excuse.

@ pinkwhiskey

The shirt are cute, but we are talking about babies, not adults.

aww, I think they’re cute! and FWIW, if someone is sick enough to stare at an infant/toddler in a sexual manner, this shirt isn’t going to change that. I would totally buy these for all 3 of my tiny nieces!! grin

I have to say cute. While I agree that there are too many creepos out there, we shouldn’t be restricting healthy kids or their parents because of them. That gives them more power over us and our culture.

children are born with sexuality. no one likes to think about kids as sexual beings, but they don’t go from sexless angels one day to hormone-driven teenagers the next. children don’t live their sexuality in the same ways as adults, but it’s there from day one. it’s protecting that sexuality from being exploited or abused that is key. i think the t-shirt is a bit tacky, but it seems puritanically conservative to say that it’s inappropriate because it insinuates that the baby girl will one day have breasts. she will, in fact, have breasts one day and being uncomfortable with that fact just leads to screwed-up kids who have issues with their sexuality.

@elena: “being uncomfortable with that fact just leads to screwed-up kids who have issues with their sexuality.” good point!!

though, after my original comment, I got to thinking and have decided that the shirt would be better if instead it said:
“Find a cure! Before I’m old enough to need one.” Not because what it says now is too sexual, but because I think it sounds better. wink

As a grandpa of a 3-month-old girl who’s already too beautiful for words, and will have to deal with groping adolescent males eventually, I’m inclined to side with “Elena” on this one. Children are born male or female – no getting around that fact. The shirt is both cute and tacky, but as Elena said, it seems puritanical to insist that a reference to breasts is inappropriate when she will, eventually, have them. That said, however, I like “Sam"s solution to all that – “... before I’m old enough to need one.” Nicely done, Sam!

I think this goes along the same line as that article a while back about kids wearing two-piece swimsuits. It’s only creepy/sexual/awkward if you make it.

ew, totally creepy and disturbing. agreed, babies and boobies don’t mix. I, too, love @sam’s edit.

And I very nearly peed my pants laughing at “find a cure before my balls drop”.

I’m with *sam*—makes the same point but is much more classy.
