Bod Mod Trend: The Bagelheads

Body Modification Trend In Japan

Bagelheads isn’t a slang term for my people, the Jews, it’s actually a bizarre new beauty trend in Japan. The country that brought you the husband hunting bra and nose stretcher has now spawned a new body modification trend that looks straight out of a delicatessen.

These extreme fetishists have been inflating their boobs, booty, arms and even face to get a cartoonish look that drives the opposite sex wild…or away. Using a saline solution drip, bagelheads are injected by professional piercers in a specific location, which causes over-the-top inflammation and swelling. Then the area can be molded and dented in to their liking. Using food dye, you can even color your bump! The mod process is called “inflating” and it only lasts one night…just like anything you pick up at club. So don’t worry mom, it’s not permanent! The stylization dates back to the 1990’s, but it was popularized by a performance artist Jerome Abramovitch at the turn of the century. And now, it’s big in Osaka and Tokyo.

Side affects may include headache, infection, skin stretching, a pressure sensation, a slight case of wonky eye, oh yeah, and a swollen body part that looks like it needs some cream cheese. [Bizarre Mag via WOW]

I think I’m going to go vomit now.  I don’t understand it either.

Wow.  As someone who is both tattooed and pierced, let me just say that even I find that freaking terrifying!

Perhaps it isn’t only for use on the forehead…

I am definitely a supporter of artistic expression, especially through body alterations (tatts, piercings, mods whatever).  And one of my favorite things to say to people who judge the fact that I have tatts is “My body is a house for my soul and I’m just decorating”.  However… these body mods just creep me out! It looks like these guys are suffering from an allergic reaction to a sting by a hornet the size of a football.

It reminds me of the Coneheads—so weird.

OMG that looks like a bad alien from Star Trek. If some guy in a bar tried to approach me looking like that I’d either be running away screaming or calling 911 because I’d think they needed medical attention!

Although people should express them selves physically however they want-that is really gross.

I’m pretty relieved to hear that this isn’t permanent, and since it’s only temporary I can get behind it slightly more. Unattractive as it may be in my mind, at least they won’t look like this when they’re 80.

As a tattooed and pierced person….. eeeeew! This looks awful. People do insert things under their skin, which I don’t like personally, but at least they look sharp, even and don’t, you know, close your eyes up. Gross.

Bahaha! Ok… not that I think this is attractive, but I think I get it. I mean, how hilarious would it be to run around with a giant, temporary, bagel-shaped lump on your head? Really hilarious! It’s strange, but I bet it’s fun.

kati-anne i totally agree! haha man if one of my dumb ass friends thought they wanted to do that just for the hell of it, and which lasts a few hours, i’d think i was disgustingly hilarious. and to see others faces lmfao…

I guess stuff like this just ends up being newsworthy since it is extremely gross and weird but I think it’s even more weird (or funny?) that I find out about this on an English website when I actually live in Tokyo, sigh. So not sure how to react to the “And now, it’s big in Osaka and Tokyo.” comment when I haven’t seen it around yet over here with my own eyes lol. O-well that’s what the internet and the media is all about. :p Oh and this is the same way I found out about that bra thing too. Haven’t found the actual thing yet but I suppose that’s harder to find since it’s more hidden lol and not “in your face” ew! Lol. God help me if I see that bagel face on the train! Yuck!
