Blog For Choice: What Is Your Pro-Choice Hope For President Obama?

Today is Blog For Choice day, when pro-choice bloggers everywhere “raise the profile of reproductive rights in the blogosphere,” while commemorating Roe V. Wade, which celebrates its 36th anniversary today. Each year, Blog For Choice poses a question and ask the blogosphere to answer and this year’s is especially timely, given the inauguration of President Barack Obama. “What is your pro-choice hope for President Obama and/or the new Congress?” My hope is that Obama and Congress will work together to redistribute the money spent on abstinence only education the last eight years and put it towards comprehensive and compassionate sex education. Everyone, pro-choice and anti-choice, wants abortion statistics to go down and the only way to get there is by making sure everyone, particularly teenagers, understands how to protect themselves from pregnancy (and STDs). More prevention $$$!
Ok, I work in prevention so I’m pretty biased here. But I’m very much for comprehensive ed over abstinence only ed (btw, proper comprehensive sex ed programs DO teach about the efficacy of absitnence and the limitations of prophylactics, something people who rave about abstinence only ed. criticize comprehensive ed programs for not doing).
Sadly, with the housing market falling out and taking much of state revenue with it where I live/work, guess what the first prevention funding to go in the first wave of budget cuts was - you guessed it! TEEN PREGNANCY PREVENTION FUNDING.
Thankfully, my (then) boss refused to take money that came with an abstinence only caveat, so nothing in our region was affected.

I hope more money goes to PP, my college group Vox did lots of stuff with them on campus. I certainly hope they get more dough.

I want more money to fund comprehensive sex education in schools. Time has proven that abstinence only education does not work!
